Diorama Enthusiasts Busy
Both Boys and Girls Are Interested in
Sunday Star’s Cut-outs.
These young persons arc admiring a finished diorama por
traying "The Creeping Wall,” which has been prepared by the
artist for the icorld museum page in next Sunday's paper.

Diorama In The Star is “The
Creeping Wall" and shows a
mother polar bear and her
two cubs looking down into a valley
in Greenland, where a huge glacier
forms a blue wall. Glaciers are rivers
of ice. You know what happens whpn
rain falls on fields and hilltops, the
water comes together in little rivu
lets to make the brooks which form
larger streams and eventually rivers.
If it continues raining the rivers rush
toward the sea in great floods, carry
ing everything movable with them.
Trees are uprooted and houses and
barns float away.
If you can imagine the same thing
happening in Arctic countries where
It. is too cold to rain, you will see
how glaciers are madp. Snow falls
on the hills year by year. It is packed
down into deep drifts by its own
weight. The Arctic Summer is too
short for the sun to melt all the
snow. Perhaps you've seen snow drifts
at the end of a long Winter which do
not. look like snow any more because
the flakes have pressed together so
tightly that they form a granular
Ice. This is exactly what happens
to the Arctic snow.
Snow Becomes Solid.
Anri as years pass and the weight
becomes greater this snow ice becomes
more solid. The valleys are filled
with it, and finally, just as in a
flooded river, this great mass starts
moving. It has become a glacier—a
river of ire. and it moves down the
valley to the sea sweeping everything
movable before it.
In this case the movable objects
are not houses and barns or trees,
but rocks sometimes bigger than
houses. The glacier gouges out the
aides of hills until the hilltops topple
down in avalanches on top of tie
glacier.
The uneven valley bed, which, of
rourse. is solid rock, causes this ice
river to crack into deep fissures and
erevices. Some of these extend all the
way from the bottom to the top. And
the landslides falling into them bring
soil and rock to be packed tight and
later dumped into the sea. Not all
glaciers, therefore, are clear blue ice,
but some are mottled and gray with
the stones and earth they carry. The
largest glaciers are found in the Arc
tic and Antarctic regions, but there
are also glaciers in New Zealand.
Northern India and the Alps. And
there are even some in our own
United States.
Great Lakes Formed.
Thousands of years ago a great
glacier covered most of North Amer
ica—scooped out the hollows of our
Great Lakes and most of the present
river beds. In some places thLs wall
stretched across what is now the
United States—a creeping wall a mile
| or two high. When it melted it left
1 (treat mounds of gravel, ground up
from huge boulders, and hills of fine
rock dust. Later swirling winds car
peted our great plains with this dust
to depths of more than a hundred
feet. The dust-storms of recent years
have laid bare theSe deposits of fine
glacial dust, which is again being
blown over America.
In a later diorama we will tell
something about this great glacier
and the odd animals that lived in
America at that time. But next Sun
day's diorama shows a present-day
glacier in action and explains how
masses of ire fall from the creeping
wall to become Icebergs and float
! sway into the sea.

Dr. Nellis W. Stephenson Was
Resident of Silver Spring.

Saratoga avenue. Silver Spring. Md.,
died May 29 at the residence of her
son. Dr Stanley S. Stephenson, in
Wilmington, N. C.
She was a native ot New England
i and resided for a number of years in
i Puerto Rico, coming to Washington
during the World War. and was a
! consultant on the Board of Veterans’
Appeals.
In addition to her son. a daughter.
Mrs. Josephine Burdette, Kensington.
, Md.. survives.
W. C. SEITZ RITES SET
Funeral Services Tomorrow in
Fort Myer Chapel.
Funeral services will be held in Fort
Mver Chapel at 10 a m tomorrow for
Walter C. Seitz. 45. of 1303 S street
southeast, musician in the Navy Band,
who was killed Monday when his auto
mobile crashed into a telephone pole
near Rockville. Md. Burial will be in
Arlington National Cemetery.
Seitz was returning home from
Glenn Rock, Pa., his birthplace, where
he had gone to decorate his mothers
grave.
Surviving are his widow. Mrs. Grace
Seitz; a brother Paul of Glenn Rock,
and two nephews. Clyde of Glenn
Rock and Woodward Seitz, Washing
ton.

$250,000 Sought Here in
University’s First Ap
peal for Funds.
With an opening dinner at the Wil
lard Hotel tonight, more than 200
members of the American University
program campaign will launch a drive
to raise $250,000 here as part of the
goal of $2,000,000 expected from the
Nation.
Dr. Arthur C. Christie, president of
the board of trustees of the university
and general chairman of the cam
paign, in issuing a call for the official
opening of the campaign, stressed the
point that, through the School of
Public Affairs and the Graduate
School, more than 1,200 Government
employes have been talcing work dur
ing the last year designed to make it
possible for them to carry on their
every-day activities in such a manner
as to render the best possible service
to the Nation.
Outstanding Problems.
Dr. Christie also pointed out that,
through the university's College of
Liberal Arts and Graduate School,
hundreds of future leaders in the pro
fessions, in business and in Govern
ment have been provided with a real
istic picture of the outstanding prob
lems in the field of social sciences.
“The university has now reached
the place where, if it is to develop on
a sound basis, it must obtain addi
tional support,” he stated. “The
trustees know of nothing which would
be more appropriate than for a uni
versity which is primarily interested
in public affairs to, first of all, turn
for assistance to the city in which it
is located, the residents of which are
the Nation's leaders in public affairs.
Confident nt Success.
“That is why we are now asking for
(250,000 from the residents of Wash
ington. We have every confidence
that they will respond to our appeal

manner.”
The campaign marks the first time
the university has made a public
appeal for funds.
