Republican League Annual Garden Fete Yesterday Afternoon ^HE annual garden party of the 1 League of Republican Women was liven yesterday afternoon at the home of Senator and Mrs. James J. Davis, on Massachusetts avenue. The weather, though very warm, was ideal for garden fetes and the party was largely attended, many going early to play bridge under the lovely old trees. Additional guests arrived for tea and the brief program of entertainment and Mrs. Davis received the guests, assisted by Mrs. Grant Cantacuzene, recently elected president of the league. Mrs. Davis wore a becoming garden frock of figured chiffon and Mrs. Cantacuzene was in white with green accessories. Mrs. Warren R. Austin, who was chairman of the j fete, was in figured crepe in shades of J pink and blue, with which she wore a picture hat of pink. Mrs. Edward Everett Gann, sister of the late Vice President Curtis, was among those at the party, one of the first she has attended since the sud den death of Mr. Gann, which fol lowed so closely the death of former Vice President Curtis. She wore black lace and a wide-brimmed black hat. Following the bridge game refresh ments were served on the lawn and many enjoyed the brief program of entertainment given by Miss Marion Venable and Mr. Paul Fox, who danced a lovely waltz on the lawn, accom panied by Mrs. Sylvia Kaplowitz, who played the accordion. Through the afternoon the fortune tellers were busy looking into the future for the inquis itive. Mrs. Eleanor Hall and Miss Gale Nelson playing the roles of sooth »ayers. Misses Jane. Jean. Joan and Jewell Davis, attractive daughters of the hostess, assisted ir> the serving of the refreshments, and others assist ing were Mrs. Cooper Rhodes, Mrs. James G. Wilkes, Mrs. Lawrence Proc tor, Miss Dorothy Tirrell, Miss Frances Rainey, Mrs. George L. Hart, Mrs. William H. Mondell, jr.; Miss Dorothy Smith, Mrs. Jordon Edmonds and Mrs. Emerv Wheeler. Mrs. Frank W. Mondell, vice presi dent of the league, and former presi dent, was accompanied by her daugh ter-in-law. Mrs. Frank W. Mondell, Jr., who was married last month. Mrs. Mondell, sr„ was in deep rod chiffon with a gray figure and her wide brimmed picture hat matched her cos tume. Mrs. Edward A. Harriman, also former president, wore white with green accessories and Mrs. William Fitch Kelley, whose administration ax president closed this Spring, wore a chiffon gown in orchid and yellow fig ures and a matching hat. Fulbrights Hosts at Garden Party for New Representative 'T'RANQUIL BAR, the Wilson lane estate of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Ful bright, was the scene Monday of a Memorial day garden party and tea In honor of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thomas, new Representative to Con gress from Houston. Tex. Attending were many members of Congress who had stayed in town over the holiday week end. Guests numbered about 250. Refreshments were served in the house and terraced gardens. Mrs. Thomas, the guest of honor, wore a dark blue and white mousseline de aoie dress with a corsage bouquet of white roses, while Mrs. Fulbright was dressed In white net and carried vio lets and lilies of the valley. Assisting Mr*. Fulbright were Mrs. W. M. Ram seyer, wife of the former Representa tive from Iowa, and her daughter, Miss Barbara Ramseyer; Mrs. Adam Weir, also of Iowa; Mrs. Catherine Nichols and Miss Margaret Black. Prominent among the guests who attended were Senator and Mrs. Mor ris Sheppard of Texas, Senator and Mrs. James P. Pope, former Senator and Mrs. B. J. Mrs. Doyle Returning The president of the Board of Edu cation, Mrs. Henry Grattan Doyle, Who left Saturday for Birmingham, Ala., where she delivered the com mencement address to the graduating class of the State College of Alabama, at Montevallo, Monday, and stopped oft at Knoxville to visit some of the T. V. A. developments, will return today. June 14 she will deliver the baccalaureate address to the gradu ates of the Massachusetts State Col lege for Teachers at Framingham, Mass.
