Graduate of Central High Wins Highest Honors in Liberal Arts. Scouting the possibility of the United States being led “into the maws of fascism or communism,” Ernest K. Llndley, Washington qprrespondent of the New York Herald Tribune, told graduates of American University last night that during the last four years "our democratic Institutions have not only functioned with success, but also have been strengthened at the base." He spoke at the twenty-third com mencement exercises of the university at Memorial Continent .1 Hall of the D. A. R., where 87 were awarded de grees by Dr. Joseph M. M. Gray, chancellor of the institution. Sidney Sachs of 1513 Webster street, •on of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Sachs and graduate of Central High School, was awarded the highest honors of the College of Liberal Arts, the college honor prize of $100, for "making the largest contribution to the college during four years.” Sachs and William Powell, both graduates, returned yes terday morning from England, where they represented the National Student Federation of America, debating lead ing universities of the British Isles. Powell of 2449 Tunlaw road graduated summa cum laude, and was elected a member of the College Honor Society. Sees Electorate Alert. In his commencement address on "Democracy Today,” Lindley declared that “certainly not in my time have there been such free, lively and wide spread discussions of public questions, and as electorate so alert and informed. The new interest in political, social and economic problems,” he said, "is shown in the universities, quite con spicuously in your own.” "Most of the reforms that have been made or are being considered here," he declared, “have long been imbedded in the social systems of other nations where democracy still flourishes.” v^maioaies were presented to Chan cellor Gray for award of degrees by Dr. George B. Woods, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and by Dr. Ernest S. Griffith, dean of the Gradu ate School. The invocation was pro nounced by Rev. Raphael H. Miller, pastor of National City Christian Church, father of Raphael H. Miller, jr., a graduate, and the benediction was by Rabbi Henry Segal of B’nai Israel Congregation, of which Sidney Sachs is a member. Among the candi dates for degrees presented by Dr. Woods was his daughter, Margaret Woods, who graduated “cum laude,” and was a member of the College Honor Society. Among the distinguished guests was H. C. Byrd, president of Maryland University. Meantime today the American Uni versity development program contin ued its campaign, with a luncheon meeting at the Willard Hotel, where the speaker was Dr. Ze Barney Phil lips, rector of the Church of the Epiphany. The luncheon report meet ing yesterday was addressed by Dr. Allen A. Stockdale, former pastor of First Congregational Church. The campaign is working toward a goal of $250,000 here in Washington. Dr. Words paid tribue to both Sachs and Powell lor their debating tour of the British Isles, for which they were accorded the "Hughes Spe cial Award.” Other prizes to college students were awarded as follows: Alpha Chi Omega award of $100, to the young woman of unusual achievement, character, personality— Mary Elizabeth Morse of Lakewood, Ohio.
