Quantico Students Feted Dance Is Held for 200 in Platoon-Leaders’ Training Class. U ANTI CO, Va., July 24—The 200 college men who are here from various colleges through out the country for the Pla 1 aders Class, training at the Marine Corps schools, were entertained this evening at a dance at the Officers' Club. One hundred society girls from Fred ericksburg and Washington came to Quantico for this party and are the guests over the week end of officers and their families on the post. Music for the dance was played by the Ma- ine Band Orchestra and Capt. Alan Shapely had Charge of the ar rangements. The Platoon Leaders Class will be honored at another dance on August 13. Col. Leander A. Clapp is taking a two weeks’ motor trip through New England. Mrs. Clapp is in Long Beach visiting her daughter, Mrs. Alpha Bowser, wife of Lieut. Bowser, U S M. C. On Thursday the Marine Officers' polo team went to Baltimore to play the 3d Cavalry team in a match game lr> the Intercircuit Tournament, held at the Maryland Polo Club Field. Maj. Candler A. Wilkinson, U. S. A., Maj. Ford O. Rogers. Capt. Booker C. Batterton. Capt. Ira Kimes, Lieut. Car son A. Roberts and Lieut. Randall M Victory were the players from this post Who wrent to Baltimore. Mrs. Rogers. Mrs. Wilkinson, Mrs. Kimes and Mrs. Roberts accompanied their husbands. Mrs. William L. Mann and her daughter, Miss Beverly Mann, who have been visiting in California while Capt. Mann, U. S. N., has been in Europe attending a medical meeting, will return to the post the first of the week. Capt. Mann will return from Ru mania the second week in August. Maj. and Mrs. Moses J. Gould and their children. Virginia. Bobby and Bunty. have arrived here for duty from San Diego and they are at home at Quarters R-6. Miss Douglass Jacobsen, daughter of Lieut. Col. and Mrs. Arnold W. Jacobsen, is the guest of Miss Jean Shuler in Washington for a short visit. Miss Helen Kane of Harrisburg. Pa., has been the guest this week of her brother-in-law and sister, Lieut, and Lieut Sneeringer's aunt, Miss Flor ence Dp Lone of Annapolis, is visit ing Lieut, and Mrs. Sneeringer this week end. Following the golf tournament last Sunday afternoon between the Ma rine team and the Argyle Country Club team of Washington, the visitors were entertained by the Marine offi cers at a cocktail party and buffet supper in the grill room at the Offi cers’ Club. Members of this post who were present were Maj. and Mrs. Dudley Brown. Capt. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Kline. Capt. and Mrs. Stanley E. Rid derhof, Mr. Allen Puryear, Mr. and Mrs. Ray A. Trevelyan. Waterman, has returned to Quantico from An napolis. where he was the guest for a fortnight of his grandmother, Mrs. Robert Lee Duvall at her home, Moss Haven. Capt. and Mrs. L. R. Kline and their daughter Kathleen have come here from Vallejo, Calif., and are now at home at Quarters F-l. Mrs. Alice Brunton of Annapolis was the guest last week end of Lieut, and Mrs. Thomas B. Hughes. Mr. and Mrs. James H. Dodge of Washington are spending this week end on the post with Lieut, and Mrs. Louis J. Fields. Capt. and Mrs. Cyril W. Martyr re turned recently from leave which they spent in New Jersey and New York. Capt. and Mrs. James E. Jones are the parents of a daughter, born last Sunday at the Georgetown Hospital. Miss Nonie Council, Miss Myrtle Sanderson and Miss Virginia Dennis, all of Norfolk, Va., were the guests last week end of Capt. and Mrs. Thomas G. McFarland. Capt. and Mrs. Miller V. Parsons spent several days last week in Pitts burgh, where Capt. Parsons attended the annual convention of the 2d Division Association at the William Penn Hotel. Maj. and Mrs. Merwin H. Silver thorn of this post also attended the convention. Miss Carolyn M. Hopkins of Provi dence, R. I, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Miles S. Newton, and Capt. Newton for an indefinite stay. Capt. and Mrs. Hawley C. Water man were hosts at a small dinner party at their quarters last Saturday evening, honoring their house guest, Mrs. Cornelius J. Eldridge of Wash ington. Other guests were Lieut. Comdr. and Mrs. Malcolm W. Pem berton of Alexandria and Capt. Sam uel K. Bird. Later the party went to the club dance. Capt. and Mrs. Walter L. J Bayler and their small daughter Virginia have arrived here for duty from San Diego and they have been assigned Quarters N-6. Capt. Samuel K. Bird Is a new member of this command. Miss Mary Virginia Hunter, daugh ter of Lieut. Comdr. and Mrs. Dewitt T. Hunter, is the guest of Lieut. Charles Creighton. U. S. N, and Mrs. Creighton in Pensacola, Fla. Mrs. Sydney Chandler of Savannah, Ga., is the gaiest of Lieut. Col. and Mrs. Louis W. Whaley. Capt. and Mrs. J. M. Ranck, who have arrived here from China duty, are at home at Quarters 109. Homicides and murder are dealt with forcibly. The record of homicides as compared with motor vehicle fa talities shows that a man who murders with a gun is a little fellow as com pared to the reckless driver who kills with an automobile. Newton In Staunton Home CTAUNTON, Va., July 24—Of In terest in Virginia la the wedding of Miss Rebecca Dickerson Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Smith of this city, to Mr. Roy L. Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam K. Newton of Clarksville. The ceremony was performed Thursday. July 16, at the Baptist parsonage by Rev. I. T. Jacobs. After a short wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Newton will make their home in this city. Dr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Garst left Saturday on a motor trip to Bristol, Tenn., where they will spend some time with Dr. Garst's parents, Mr. and Mrs, S. H. Garst. Mr. and Mrs. Evan Hughes Thomas and their children, Cynthia Dean Thomas and Evan, Jr., arrived here Tuesday from Blairstown, N. J., to spend a few weeks with Mrs. Thomas’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Rich creek. Mr. Thomas was a former Eng lish Instructor at Saunton Military Academy and has recently moved from Somerville, N. J., to Blairstown, where he has accepted the supervising prin cipalship of Blairstown public schools. Mr. Robert Taylor of New York City is visiting at Steephill as the guest of Col. and Mrs. W. H. Peyton. Miss Peggy Russell has as her guests at her home, Benbreagh, Miss Helen Ritchie Morton and Mr. Sam uel Lelger of Raleigh, N. C. Dr. Porbus was gradu- I ated from Johns Hopkins Medical School, and spent two years with Mayo Bros, before going to Germany.
