I A Guffev iContinued From First Page 1 looking straight at the speaker. "I hope when I do become a candi date.” Wheeler went on, “that the Senator from Pennsylvania will come out to Montana with his contributions and that he will take the other side and support my opponent, whoever he may be. When he runs for Gov ernor of Pennsylvania, I shall make it a point to visit the State of Penn sylvania. I shall not have any of Mr. Mellon's money and I shall not have anybody else's money. I shall go there at my own expense and with my own money and I shall make some speeches." O'Mahonev Interrupts. Wheeler turned to the defense of O'Mahoney and Burke, but O'Ma honey interrupted. “I know perfectly well.'' he said, “that nothing said on the radio last night will in the slightest, degree in jure me or in the slightest degree hinder me from doing my duty as I see it. I know perfectly well that the members of this body know exact ly how to assess the value of the attack that was made last night. It may not be that the country will understand, because the country is under the impression that the chair man of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was talking. ' I say here, in the presence of the gentleman who spoke on the radio last night and in the presence of those Democrats who are likely to be candi dates for office in 1938, that the sooner we get that man out of the position he now occupies by virtue of the acquiescence of his fellows, the better it will be for the Democratic party.” If he had it to do again. O'Mahoney continued, he would not change a word he has uttered or a vote he has cast, adding that: “I would rather walk out of the door of this chamber and never eome back into this body than to surrender an honesty conviction that I have.” Denounces “So-Called Liberals.” While Guffey still sat, expression less, Wheeler resumed with a denunci ation of “so-called liberals and New Dealers.” "On the one hand," he said, “some of these people denounce economic royalists, and on the other hand they go out and try to shake them down when they are roming down to testify before a committee, asking them for campaign contributions on the one hand and denouncing them upon the other. “Great liberals, great progressives, great leaders of the unwashed of this country, friends of labor, if you please, and friends of the farmer. When did you ever hear of a political boss being a friend of the working man in this country? * * * "If you want to wash dirty linen, you may wash it. either upon this floor or upon the public platform, and I I say to you: " 'Lay on, Macduff, and damned be he who first cries, 'Hold, enough.’ ” Burke Joins Attack. Burke took up the denunciation of Guffey with a statement that he had supported the New Deal "until I came to see that sometimes a new deal may quickly become a rotten deal." and "I last some of my enthusiasm for some of the things I had been supporting." It would be easy, he said, to do no work, attend no committee meetings, read no bills, simply "call the White House, or perhaps the Postmaster General, and find out how I am sup posed to vote." He added: "Pennsylvania may want that kind of representation in the Senate and if they do, why God bless them, and let them have it." He invited Guffey to go to Ne braska and oppose him in his next election campaign. Calls Speech "Cheap.” "I will meet him,” he said, "at the Missouri River boundary and gladly welcome him to the State be cause I know of nothing that would make my almost unanimous election to the Senate more certain than to have the junior Senator from Penn sylvania come and tell the voters of Nebraska the kind of stuff he uttered over the radio last night, cheap stuff, tawdry stuff.” Then Holt: ’ I want to say that since the junior Senator from the State of Pennsyl vania has become the custodian of the seats in the United States Senate, I hope he will handle the job in better fashion than he handled the job as alien property custodian. We still need 96 seats in this body.” He expressed regret that the rules of the Senate would not permit him to express himself as he would have liked and urged that the members of the Senate read a magazine article in the American Mercury for No vember, 1936. “It gives,” he said, “what I cannot give you on the floor of the Senate without transgressing the rules of this body." Senator I.a Follette. Progressive, of Wisconsin called ^Holt “to order” as previously he had called Wheeler and Burke “to order” on t'ne ground that they were violating a rule forbidding a Senator to attribute unworthy mo tives to another.
