VATICAN10VAKIA Boundaries of Post-War Nation Recognized by Papa! Bull. j Mr the Associated Press. PRAHA, Czechoslovakia, September 24.—Czechoslovakia, new as a nation, but with the oldest anti-Vatican tradi tions in Europe, has come to terms with the Catholic Church after nearly two decades of difficult negotiation. By a recently concluded pact, the Holy See recognized the existence of the new republic and arranged to as sign archbishoprics and dioceses con forming to the boundaries established by the post-war treaties. I Hitherto Catholic Church adminis tration in Czechoslovakia, the Bohemia which produced John Hus, forerunner of Martin Luther, had clung to the obsolete political boundaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Germany Blamed for Deadlock. Authorities in Praha have asserted Germany is largely responsible for the rapprochement between Praha and Rome. The Vatican's enduring con flict with the Nazi regime is considered a factor that hastened new arrange ments of friendship with Germany's democratic neighbor. j A papal bull, issued September 6, announced that church divisions in Czechoslovakia will conform to the na tional boundaries. The arrangement, however, includes a small area in Germany within Czechoslovakia dioceses and a con siderable territory in Czechoslovakia forms a part of the German arch bishopric of Breslau. Attempts of the Vatican and Czechoslovakia to reach agreement with Germany on the re allocation of these have been unsuc cessful. The archbishopric of Breslau Actually owns land in this border area, which has a large German population, and on account of which Nazi leaders have attacked verbally the Czechoslo vakian government. Empire Borders Discarded. The pre-war church divisions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire are being 1 discarded. Two-thirds of the Cath olics in Slovakia and many in the western part were under administra- ! tions of foreign bishops. Some were J Included in Rumanian. Polish and Ger- j man dioceses. It caused confusion in ! church functions and in disposition of church properties. , In Czechoslovakia the government | has begun to discourage anti-church feeling, founded in the traditions of John Hus, a national hero, and in memories of religious wars and sup- ; pression of Czech nationalism under j the Catholic Hapsburgs and the j Catholic influence of the Austro-Hun garian Empire, whose yoke the Czechs j threw off at the end of the World War. A majority of Czechoslovakia's pop- j ulation is Catholic.
