By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 24.—Most divisions of trade displayed a more aggressive stride this week, with quickening retail distribution the out standing feature, Dun Ac Bradstreet said today in the weekly review of!, business. Retail sales for the country as a whole were estimated at from 3 to 7 per cent ahead of the preceding week and from 8 to 22 per cent better than for the comparable 1936 period. “As strength of consumer purchas ing power was revealed by the intensi fied interest in a wide range of sea sonal goods,” the agency said, “buyers in wholesale markets covered with less caution the balance of their Fall requirements. “Although makers of automobiles and steel were at the season's low, and curtailment proceeded at many textile mills, operations in other industrial divisions maintained or lengthened the advantage over those of a year ago.” The review noted as an indication of widening consumer demand that the interest of shoppers extended to virtually all retail store offerings this week, whereas in the preceding week there was a marked tendency to con centrate on wearing apparel. “The purchasing trend continued toward the higher priced, better qual ity merchandise.” the review said, adding that "moderate mark-ups were taken as a matter of course.” Percentage increases over a year ; agu me ninjui tiwtrjs hi Aug land ranged from 5 to 12; Eastern States, 10 to 20; Middle Western, 10 to 20; Northwest, 14 to 20; Southern, 12 to 18; Southwest, 15 to 25, and Pacific Coast, 10 to 18. On the wholesale front, reports to the agency indicated purchasing power in the rural sections had been well sustained at recent levels. “Business sent in by road salesmen,” the review said, "generally surpassed the volume in urban centers.” - .- ■ % INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK September 24 —New York Security Dealers Association: (Noon quotations.! EFFECT OF STOCK SLUMP DEBATED 3ross-Currents Still at Work, With Important Industries Curtailing Outputs. Special Dispatch The Star. NEW YORK, September 24.—In its weekly summary of the general business situation the Standard Sta tistics Co. of New York currently comments as follows: “Numerous cross-currents are still at work in the business situation, but in the main the trend of activity is still moderately downward. A num ber of important industries are cur tailing production, as backlogs built up earlier in the year are being steadily reduced and new orders have failed to come up to earlier expecta tions. This is particularly true in such industries as textiles, steel, cop per and brass products and shoes. "It is difficult to forecast to what extent the sharp decline in security prices wdll affect industrial volumes over the remainder of the year. The security market recession has natu rally had a sobering effect on senti ment, and the slackness in new order ing is a clear Indication that man agements are following conservative policies. “Aggregate manufacturing activity is still holding well above last year's levels, but, with the exception of the important automobile industry, none of the major lines is likely to show much, if any, improvement from pres ent levels over the next several months. The trend of textile activity Is still downward: mill schedules are being reduced, and, because of an uncertain price structure, new buying continues light. Building activity is continuing to lag. and the seasonal trend will be downward until the early months of next year.” INSURANCE STOCKS NEW YORK September 24 OP.—New VTork Security Dealers Association: Bid Asked Aetna Cas (Cat __ 82'a S6>* Aetna Ins (1.60) _ 423« 4434 Aetna Life (,80a) _ 25 26'2 Am Equit il.60a> _ 35'2 Am Ins Newark ilia)_ 10V* 12 Am Reins (.8og> _ 33'* .'tS'i Am Reserve 'la) _ 24'2 26 Am 8uretv (2'*>_ 45 47 Automobile (la> _ 28'2 .20 Balt Amer (20a) _ 6'4 7'4 Carolina (1.30) _ . 2034 "O', City of N Y il.20) __ 1934 "1'4 Conn Gen Life (.80) _ 3n'2 31 >4 Contin Cas G.20) _ __ •>234 °434 Fid A- Den <4ai 112 1)6 Firemens Newark (.30) __ 934 11'4 Frank Fire iiai 28 20'2 Gen Reinsur '21 xd _ 3434 36'4 Glen Fails (1.6o) _ __ 40'2 4°'2 Giobe A Ren (,80a) _ 1«'4 I734 Globe A Rut _ 47'2 51'* Great Amer (la) _ 2! »4 23V4 Hanover '1.60' _ 28'* 30 Hartford Fire i2)__ 67'4 00'i Home Fire Sec __ "i4 rt'4 Home Ins (la) _ 30 30 Homestead )1) _ 1S'2 20 Knickerbocker (.80) _ 12 13'2 Lincoln Fire _ 41, 4s„ Maryland Cas _ 4'2 53a Mass Bond i3'2) _ _ 50'/2 54 Merc Ins Pr. By the Associated Press. Lendable bank funds, reflecting ef fects of the administration’s "easy money" policy, Increased $140,000,0f)0 ’ during the week ended September 22, The Federal Reserve Board placed the total supply of “excess reserves," or Idle bank funds, at $1,020,000,000. Under a joint Treasury-Resewe Board credit policy, the Treasury re leased J300.000.000 of gold from its " “sterilized” account. The release had the effect of channeling additional funds into the Nation's banking struc ture, increasing the supply available for lending and tending to ease credit conditions. The policy also involves Reserve Board purchasing of Government se curities on the open market. The board's report, however, said no change was made in the Reserve banks’ Fed eral portfolio during the week ended September 22. Money in circulation declined $25, 000,000 during the week to $6,529, 000,000. This also was a factor in lifting excess reserves above the bil lion-dollar level. Changes in member bank reserve balances and related items during the week and the year ended September 22, 1937, were reported as follows: Sep 22. Sep 15.
