ARCHITECTS HAIL “ - Dollar Value of Work Shows Average Gain of 27 Per Cent. That the dollar volume of residen tial building work handled by archi tects in the United States will show an average increase of 27 per cent In 1937 over 1936, and that an av erage of 74 per cent of architects’ residential building clients in the first half of 1937 were interested in new construction, rather than mod ernization. were among the findings of a survey of opinions by repre sentative architects in 41 States, completed yesterday by the Ruberoid Co., manufacturers of building prod ucts. Women, according to 82 per cent of the replying architects, are most frequently responsible for the selec tion of the general type of house to be built. Twelve per cent believed the husband's choice in this respect was most likely to be the deciding one, while 6 per cent indicated that the final decision was ordinarily a 60-50 compromise. Women Consider Appearance. In considering materials for the exterior of the house, it was found that women are most influenced by appearance and men by first cost. Other factors strongly considered by both men and women were fire pro tection, insulation and upkeep cost. Another finding of the survey, sup posted by 85 per cent of the reporting architects, was a growing tendency on the part of home builders of mod erate means (able to finance a house costing from $7,500 to $15,000) to engage the complete services of an architect, including supervision of construction, as well as the prepara tion of plans and specifications. The three factors considered chiefly re sponsible for this trend were: As surance that materials and construc tion will be up to specifications, a feeling of need for experienced and unbiased guidance, and a growing public realization that investment in an architect's fees saves money in the end. Increases in Illinois. The most optimistic reports came from Illinois and Iowa, w-here the re porting architects predicted an av erage increase of 66 per cent in the dollar volume of their residential prac tice this year over last, In 15 States all the reporting architects predicted some increase. In the other 26 States from which replies were received, while architects in some individual communities predicted no change or To Attend Convention Three Washington delegates to the convention of the United States Building and Loan League, which will he held October 6-8 in Los An geles. The survey was based on replies to a questionnaire received from repre sentative architects located in 168 communities of the 41 States repre sented, including small cities as well as metropolitan centers. In an nouncing the results it was empha sized that, while the questionnaire produced a considerable amount of factual data based on the actual . recent experience of architects, the purpose was not to develop compre hensive, statistical information of the type available in governmental and other standard reports, but to obtain a typical cross-section of local archi tect opinion of current conditions in the field of residential practice. MARKET REFLECTS INTEREST IN HOMES Better Reception for Ownership Argument Seen Noted by Build ing Loan Head. Behavoir of the stock market in the past few weeks is having an in direct salutary effect upon people’s interest in acquiring homes, in the opinion of Harold T. Donaldson, Lan sing. Mich., president of the United States Building and Loan League, voiced this past week to the Industry which he heads. A better reception for the home ownership arguments of the savings, building and loan associations has been noticed during this period of the exchange's extreme irritability, the league president notes from a hasty survey of some of the leading thrift and home-financing institutions of the country. “There will always be competition for the money of the man of average means, between investment in perma nent goods and use of his extra dollars in an attempt to make a quick gain," said Donaldson. “The recent de velopments in the share market have served to check up once again the dream of the little man about doubling and tripling his funds overnight. He turns with relief to the solid earth and the house upon it.” Reports from the thrift and home financing institutions surveyed tell of the home purchasers who have come in to get loans and who have been voicing these sentiments with con siderable frequency in the past month, according to the league president. The same effect is also being felt in the association's sales of properties which ■ — 1 ■■■ — they have had modernized after having had to take them over to protect their saver*’ Investments. These are said to be moving faster than customary the past month. *-—-■■■ " Bateman Hu Never Seen Game.
