GRIP IN AUSTRALIA Lyons’ Government Retains Majority in Parliament Election. 8* the Associated Press. MELBOURNE, October 24 (Sun day).—Prime Minister Joseph A. Lyons’ coalition government retained Its majority in the house of representa tives today on the basis of the first day’s tabulation of Australia's election for the federal parliament. The combined united Australian and united country parties, which support the present government, took 44 seats while the labor opposition gained only two for a total of 30. It was believed that the govern ment’s top-heavy majority in the fed eral parliament's upper house also was 6afe. Prime Minister Lyons campaigned with a “tune in with England” slo gan, urging close cooperation with Britain and a bigger navy for Aus tralia while attacking labor's “isola tionist” defense policy. Labor candidates demanded a big ger air force and accused the gov ernment of making secret conscrip tion commitments to Britain, a charge Vigorously denied by the government. Lyons declared that if the “false Issue” of conscription had not been raised, the government's position would have been even stronger. The prime minister himself was hard-pressed in his constituency and his defense minister. Sir Archdale Parkhill, was a running slightly be hind an independent opponent. - ■ > - GOV. AND MRS. C.R.
