WASHINGTON GAS REVENUES GLIB September Loss of $53,828 Is $2,236 Smaller Than in 1936 Month. Bv EDWARD C. STONE. The September report of the Wash ington Gas Light Co., filed today with the Public Utilities Commission, shows operating revenues of $453,914, an in crease of $32,145 over the same month last year. Operating expenses in creased from $389,593 in September, 1936, to $436,944 for September this year, principally due to the cost of producing the larger volume of gas sold and because of increased taxes. The net result of the month's opera tion after all deductions for interest end amortization was a seasonal loss amounting to $53,828, which, however, is $2,236 more favorable than that for September. 1936. Earnings for the nine months of the current year were $458,959, compared with $498,899 last year. Operating revenues in the nine months totaled $5,351,243. against $5,230,655. or a gain of $120,588. Op erating expenses, however, went up faster than the increase in operating earnings, standing at $4,236,017, as compared with $4,057,373. an increase Of $178,644. Gas sales reported by the company for September this year were 609.041 thousand cubic feet, as compared with 551.581 thousand cubic feet for Sep tember a year ago, an increase of 10.4 per cent. At the end of the month there were 145.388 meters in service, or a gain of 5,790 over the same period of last year. 4 Banks Increase Business Loans. Commercial loans made by member banks in the Federal Reserve System increased further in the four weeks ending October 20, the Federal Re serve Board said in its monthly finan cial and business review, just issued. Total loans and investments of re porting member banks in 101 cities declined during the same period, re flecting chiefly a steady reduction in loans to security brokers and dealers. Excess reserves of member banks, after increasing in September from $750,000,000 to more than $1,000,000, 000. showed little further change in October, the report said. Declines in industrial production reduced output to the level of a year ago, while commodity prices continued to decline. Volume of construction contracts was smaller in September and the first half of October than in the preceding six weeks. Distribution of commodities to con sumers by department stores and mail order houses increased more than the Beasonal amount, the survey states. New Loan Officer Elected. William E.
