CAPTURED KILLER
Frank Bird Says Her Home
sickness Brought Him
Back to Cleveland.
By the Associated Press.
CLEVELAND. Oct. 30.—Frank Bird,
desperado-killer, was back in jail to
night—and the reason, he said, was
that his wife “cried and cried for
her mother.”
Bird, 30, and his wife. Sylvia, 21,
were arrested at her parents’ home
last night without a shot being fired
—and with the aid of her father,
Joseph Sieber.
“Sylvia was homesick*" Theodore N.
Stapleton, chief of the Federal Bu
reau of Investigation here, quoted Bird
as saying.- "She cried and cried for
her mother. She'd been crying for
three days steady before we left New
York for Cleveland."
Bird and his brother Charles escaped
With James Widmer from county jail
in a bullet-punctuated chase last
month. Widmer was retaken in
Philadelphia October 15.
Federal authorities hunted in the
East tonight for Charles Bird in
a drive to apprehend the last fugi
tive member of thp Bird gang. Charles,
a chestnut-haired 26-vear-old despera
do, is believed with his wife Barbara.
The Birds' wives are sisters. The
hunt centered in New York and Bal
timore. agents said.
Twelve years ago Frank was con
victed of murder in Missouri, de
ceived a life sentence. Widmer also
was .convicted in 1926 of murder.
Charles Bird, still a fugitive, is wanted
to complete a 10-year sentence for
first-degree robbery, in addition to
bank robbery. All had fled Missouri's
State Penitentiary.
All face demands for their execu
tion on charges of kidnaping during
a Cleveland bank robbery.
