RETREAT IN WEEK
Extremely Small Goods
I Sales and Slump in Stocks
Influence Prices.
| Ey the Associated Press.
NEW YORK, Nov. 20—Cotton prices
lost the greater part of the gains of
the preceding week. Extremely small
demand for cotton goods and the
generally easier tone of the stock
I market were believed responsible for
some of the selling.
March contract, which had sold up
! from a November 8 low of 7.61 to 8.09
l last Friday, reacted to 7.72 and closed
j yesterday at 7.79, with the list show
i ing net losses of 19 to 29 points for
the week.
December liquidation in advance of
first notice day next Wednesday ac
counted for some pressure, but toward
the close of the week there was enough
trade and spot house buying of the
near month to impart a steadier tone.
Recent foreign buying tapered off to
small proportions and demand was
limited chiefly to short covering.
Southern selling was light as cotton
either continued to move into the
Government loan or was held off the
market.
Reports from textile centers indi
cating sharper curtailment of mill
activity than in October tended to
create pessimism. Domestic demand
for spot cotton was small, but a lit
tle foreign buying was attracted by
easiness of the dollar in foreign ex
change.
Washington advices indicated ef
forts to speed-up preparation of farm
bills, but the cotton trade obtained
little definite information as to the
probable final character of this legis
lation. Although the trend of the
market was mostly lower, fluctuations
were narrow and irregular in response
to small orders either way.

of Decline.
Ey the Associated Press.
NEW YORK, Nov. 20.—Rallying
tendencies near the close pulled to
day’s curb market out of an early de
cline.
The list turned In response to a
similar reversal of trend on the big
board. Near the end Creole Petro
leum and Newmont had net gains of
about l’i points each. Advances
ranged from fractions to around a
point in Electric Bond & Share, Ni
agara Hudson Power, Northern States
Power A, Cord Corp., Aluminum Co.
of America and American Gas &
Electric.
International Petroleum and Pitts
burgh Plate Glass failed to join the
recovery swing, but their losses were
moderate.

NEW YORK COTTON
By the Associated Press.
NEW YORK. Nov. 20 —Cotton fu
tures opened steady, down 2 to 4 on
disappointing cables and December
liquidation. December, 7.67; January,
7.69; March, 7.75; May, 7.81; July.
7.85; October, 7.95.
After easing a point or so further
from initial levels the market turned
steadier on a small amount of trade
buying and covering. The larger part
of business consisted of December
liquidation and exchanges from that
delivery to later months.
March recovered from 7.74 to 7.80,
leaving quotations unchanged to 3
points net higher shortly after the first
half hour.
Reports the Senate committee was
considering a stringent acreage con
trol bill attracted attention, but was
without apparent immediate market
influence. The Commodity Credit
Corp. reported that 2,270,217 bales of
cotton had been pledged to the loan
through November 18 at an average
price of 8.43 cents a pound.
Futures closed steady. 5 to 10 higher.
