Actually, many fine play ers shade this requirement even fur ther, as may be seen from the fol lowing hand recently bid and played at the Regency Club by Lester Bachner. West, dealer. The bidding: West North East South Pass 1 ♦ Pass a A Pass 3 V Pass 3 N. T, Pass 4 * Pass Pass Pass The bidding is noteworthy for the fact that Mr. Bachner chose to re spond one spade with four to the nine-spot. If he had made the more normal response of raising his partner to two diamonds, the same final con tract would probably have been ar rived at with North the declarer, and would have been defeated with a club opening. As it was. West opened the four of hearts. East won with the ace and led the queen of clubs. Mr. covered with the king and when West played the ace, trumped with the five of spades in dummy. He now laid down the ace of spades, and when West showed out, he was slightly an noyed naturally, but still saw a play for his contract. Accordingly, he led the eight of hearts from dummy, winning with the queen in his own hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, and proceeded to cash dummy’s two high hearts, discarding the ace and the other remaining from his own hand. Now a diamond was led and there was nothing East could do. Actually he trumped with the ten and led a second club. Mr. Bachner ruffed in dummy and continued the relentless play of the diamonds. East now niffed low, Mr. Bachner over-ruffed, led a club, trumped with dummy's ace and played another diamond. At this point East retained the queen and a small trump, and Mr. Bachner the nine of spades and a email dub, and it made no difference whether East trumped high or low. If he trumped low, Mr. Bachner would over-ruff, if he trumped high, Mr. would discard. SERGEANT STONY CRAIG—Good Ship Tuscaroro. —By FRANK H.
