Annabelle could have stood the indifference of thi others. They, after all, didn't ' matter, though at first their attitudes had hurt her pride. , But Steve! Well, - Steve was different. He was big and blond, with an in- ■ dolent smile and j humorous eyes. She had made a k play for Steve. 1 Definitely. And I she hadn't reached s first base. ® At first she was * angry, then puz zled. She couldn’t "Meaning,” hi said, looking at hei steadily, "that we'ri not bright enough ' to appreciate Anna belle. Friend, eh?’ Annabelle colored It was, as far a: she knew, the Aral time in her life she had ever blushed It made her wild It took her fully i minute before shi felt she had her self well enough under control U speak. "You're remark ably quick, mj f r ie n d." S h i squeezed out t smile that wa: rather a s i c k 13 gesture at best. “Listen,” sait understand rnyta or fnyia s irienas, and, of course, her pride wouldn't per mit her to ask. When Phyla had asked her down to Leland for a week's vacation, she had accepted eagerly. A week with Phyla would mean a change from the routine of Ocean Bluffs. It would mean meeting new people, new* men. It would be fun, she thought, even though Leland was no more than a wide place in the road. She had expected to knock 'em dead in Leland. After all, girls didn't come much better looking than Annabelle these days. Moreover, she had been around. She had traveled in Europe and was graduated from a smart fin ishing school. She knew the answers. She was sophisticated, and wasn't it reasonable to suppose, therefore, that the smug little group of young folks in Leland would sort of open their eyes? Smug! That, she thought, was the word that summed them up to per fection. Why, you’d think that they were all worldly wise and had had as much experience as she. You'd think all the girls were as good looking and that all the boys were used to tearing around with movie actresses or some thing. They were polite. They were even kind, but she didn’t get the rec ognition she expected, that her young spirit needed in order to make her happy. They were all very matter-of fact about her. She tried to set the town on fire and they immediately squelched the blaze with their cooi, indifferent manners. She wouldn't have cared—she wouldn’t have cared one bit if it w eren't for Steve Day. Funny, she thought, to meet a man—the man—In a little town like Leland and have him turn into something that just didn't* care how you looked or the way you acted or how smartly you carry on a con versation. "You make me furious, Steve Day. You're the strangest, the—the dumb est man I've ever met!” * * * * COURSE, she immediately re gretted saying that. It was a dead give away. And Steve, though he might be dumb, was quick on the up take. 'Why” he asked, grinning inso lently. plainly delighted that she was furious. Annabelle bit hfr lip. Why not tell him? She had gone so far. why not go all the way? It wouldn’t make any difference. She'd be gone in a couple more days. ' You're smug.” she said. “You’re satisfied with what you have and never seem to want or care about anything else.” fateve soberly. “Why should we? Yoi know, after you’re gone we boys wll have to get along with what's left Our lives are here. We'll be comini in contact with Phyla and Marjorii and the others for years. We’ve go foresight, my girl.’’ That explained part of it, but no all. Steve and the others were hu man. And being human they wnuldn’ let anything like that stand in thei: way. Even so, it hurt. Steve had hur her. She realized with a sinking sen sation how hopeless it all was. Shi was a fool to stay "here longer, to ex pose herself to torture. Sooner o: later Phyla and Marjorie, beins women, would discover what was wroni with her, and that would make hei suffering intolerable. * + * * CHE packed her things and stowec them in the rumble seat of hei roadster and then went looking foi Phyla. "But. darling!” Phyla exclaimed “You just can t go now!” Annabelle knew it would be liki that. She was prepared for the ses sion that would result in her tearinj herself away, leaving Phyla almost ir tears. It was harder than she ex pected, but presently the nose of thi roadstei was pointing along the high way and she was blinking her eyes ir order to keep her vision cieared. The scream of a horn behind he: startled her and she swung over wit! an angry gesture. Her anger mountei when a coupe shot past, cut across he; course and forced her to pull up. “Of all the idiotic-” She stoppei abruptly, her heart soundly thumpini against her ribs. “Now, wait a minute,” Steve Da was saying. He put one foot on thi running board and leaned inside. I wasn't the same Steve she had known There was seomething different abou him, though she couldn't quite under stand what. "You shouldn't have taken it to hear so.” he was saying. “What I sail wasn't true. It couldn't have been, o else I wouldn't have followed—Just fo: the purpose of telling you I—I did ap preciate a good thing when I saw it but it's only now that I had the cour age to say so.” And right then, with a wild feelini of Joy, Annabelle knew exactly what i was that was different-about him. Hi was, bless his gorgeous heart, actins human! (Copyrisht. THREE MORE CONVICTS 1 AT LARGE IN MARYLAND By the Associated Press. HAGERSTOWN. Md., Nov. 22 — ! By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, Nov 22.—The Colum bia Law Review, in its issue, distrib uted today, says Associate Justice Hugo L. Black’s right to sit on the Supreme Court “may be attacked by a hoetlle administration in the future unless he is reappointed to the court after the expiration of his senatorial term."
