1 CURB IS STEAMER ' LATE IN SESSION List Still Shows Marks of Early Liquidation—Utili • ties Down. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, Dec. 2.—A steady tone characterized the curb market as trad ing approached the final hour today, but the list still showed marks of early light selling. Some utilities had losses of fractions to a point or more, including American Gas & Electric and American Light & Traction. Electric Bond & Share was about, even, while Niagara Hudson • Power and Northern States Power "A" were only a shade lower. Aluminum Co. of America was be hind around 4 points in light dealings. Gulf Oil added about a point and Pittsburgh Plate Glass a sizable frac ' tion. , Western Union Will Borrow to Meet Maturity By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. Dec. 2.—Western Union Telegraph Co. has arranged bank borrowings to meet maturity of $8,745,000 collateral trust 5 per cent bonds on January 1, 1938, it was dis closed today. G. A. Hunter, treasurer, told the Public Service Commission the Chase National Bank and Central Hanover Bank <fc Trust Co. would make a loan of $8,500,000, due within three years, , at interest ranging from 1 per cent to 2'2 per cent over the prevailing discount rate of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. NEW YORK, Dec. 2.—James D Mooney, head of the export division of General Motors Corp , reported upon his arrival from Europe today that the business recession herd had not been felt abroad so far. *'lf the rest of the world continues with its good business it probably will help us out of the recession," be said. An adverse influence in Europe, he added, was the scramble for gold in preparation for war or economic emergencies. "Everybody in Europe seems to have started grabbing gold.” he said. By the Associated Press. ATLANTA, Dec. 2.—Farm income of six Southeastern States Increased 25.1 per cent to *510,419,000 during the nine months. January through September, 1937, compared with the total for the same period last year, says the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Reporting for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, the monthly review of the bank said today the comparable 1936 income amounted to *407,998,000. The review said recetipts for farm products during September increased 65.1 per cent over August, but de clined 6.5 from the total for Septem ber «f last year. All figures include Government benefit payments, and are based on the sale of principal farm products. Retail trade in the sixth Federal Re serve district continued to expand in October, but at a less than seasonal rate. October sales in 49 reporting retail firms were 10 per cent over September and 3.5 over October, 1936, but sea sonal adjustments of the increase from September to October indicated it was about 15 per cent below normal. NKW YORK, Dec. 2.—Although stock prices continued to recede in November, two groups—utilities and representatives of the building indus try—gained ground in the month, ac cording to a compilation by Frazier Jelke A Co. As measured by 100 representative common stocks, prices dropped 10.8 per cent in November, compared with 10.2 per cent in Oc tober. The total valuation stood at $15,870,534,000 at the end of Novem ber. Thjs compared with $17,756, 768,000 at the end of the previous | month and with $15,225,646,000 on October 18, approximately the low point of the decline as measured by representative stock averages. Automobile and merchandising stocks suffered the greatest loss in the last month, judged by the rec ords examined. Motor shares declined 18J per cent, retail issues 18.5 pier cent and miscellaneous industrials 12.7 pier cent. Oils also declined more than the general average, with a loss of 13.5 per cent, while steels fell 11.3 pier cent. Rails and foods each dropped 9 pier cent, chemicals de clined 8.9 per cent, mines 8.3 pier cent, railroad equipments 7 per cent and electrical equipments only 2.9 per cent. Utilities recorded an increase of 3.3 per cent, while building shares advanced 2.6 pier cent. As compared with a year ago the valuation of stocks has declined 10.7 per cent. The 100 stocks had a value of $17,803,066,000 on November 30, 1936, after having advanced steadily for eight consecutive months. U. S. BOND HOLDINGS OF BANKS DECREASE By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, Dec. 2—New York City continued to buy and country banks to sell Government bonds in the week ended November 24. Out-of town banks sold more than institu tions in the financial center bought, making for a net decline in total bank holdings of Treasury paper. The pressing need for earning as sets, brought about by the decline in industrial loans, caused the Jump in New York. LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2.—Lockheed Aircraft Corp. reported a new peak in orders today when the backlog of unfilled business reached an all-lime high of $6,125,000, including spare parts and additional equipment, a gain of 169 per cent over the same date a year ago, according to figure* released by Robert E. Gross, president. This compares with $2,275,000 re ported as of the same date a year ago and with $3,173,000 and $2,878,000 reported at the end of the six and nine month* period of 1937 respec tively. BALTIMORE, Dec. 2—Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co taxes in creased more than 8 per cent during the first 10 months of 1937. the com pany reported to the Public Service Commission. Taxes through October totaled $1, 705,544, the company’s monthly op erating statement said, and were $130,840 more than taxes for the same period in 1936. October taxes alone amounted to $178,137, or "about 14 per cent of the customers’ telephone bill,” the re port added.
