Audubon’s Caracara
(Polyborus cheriway).

IP YOU can pronounce this name
of Audubon’s bird correctly, you
know how his voice sounds. You
must, however, remember it is a
deep, harsh note or cry.
This bird is a vulture-like hawk that
roams in Central and South America.
Its outstand.ng trick is to throw its
head back, and as it does so makes a
loud, blood-curdling, raucous call.
While the background of this bird is
far from elegant, it is extremely inter
esting. There are three genera: Au
dubon’s Caracara belongs in the Poly
borus group, which has four species.
You cannot confuse these birds with
any other. That is always a help.
You like to be able to know at sight
as many birds as you possibly can. It
Is like recalling names, fitting them
accurately to the right persons.
All members of this genus have
long, unfeathered legs. Their plumage
Is black and white. The feathers on
their crown can be raised at will,
forming a most impressive crest. The
face is almost bare, but there are well
developed bristles on the cheeks and
this gives to the bird a resemblance to
a stern grandpa. The bill is slightly
hooked at the end, making grandfather
look most determined, if you happen
to get a side view.
The caracara is a swift, strong flier,
who knows where he is going and lets
nothing cause him to detour. He is
a day hunter and is especially fond of
making the pelicans do his fisliing. He
knows where these busy and efficient
fishermen come ashore, and hovers
over them until the pelican is only too
glad to yield the contents of his fish
basket.
Among themselves caracaras are
most unsociable. They can find many
reasons for picking a quarrel and
sometimes the fight ends in the fatal
Injury of one of the combatants.
The nursery is built in a tree, or on
ledges. It is a large and roomy
affair, sticks and leaves being the
material used. Two or three eggs are
laid, thickly blotched and speckled
with dark reddish or rufous-brown,
With purple tints in some of the dots.
You may find these nests, in North
ern Lower California, Arizona, Texas
and Florida south to Ecuador.
The youngsters have a brown plum
age at birth that is soon shed for that
resembling their parents. At 1 day
old the baby is alert; his downy natal
suit with its snowy front looks like
a powder puff. His bill, even at this
most tender age, is business-like. He
is capable of holding fast to the rim
of his penthouse and‘giving a fine
imitation of his father’s cry.
When he reaches his majority he
will be 25 inches long. His uniform
of black and white contrasts well with
the dull horn-color of his bill, cerise
red or maybe yellow; rough yellow leg
gings and black claws.
So watch for this bird who sits
upright in the mesquite, or flies slowly
with stiff, outstretched neck as he
gets a bird’s-eye view of his dinner;
for here is a flier whose antics are
such that you will be amused whatever
they are.

Held in June Are Discussed.
Plans for the Eighth Pan-American
Conference to be held next year in
Lima, Peru, were discussed yesterday
at the monthly meeting of the Gov
erning Board of the Pan-American
Union. A list of regulations gov
erning the conference was adopted
and will be sent to the member gov
ernments for their criticism.
