ITALY MAY QUIT Fascist Grand Council to Meet Tomorrow at Mid ' night—Effect Studied. Bt the Associated Press. ROME. Dec. 10 —Indications came from high quarters last night that the Fascist Grand Council, summoned for one of its dramatic midnight sessions tomorrow, might announce Italy’s resignation from the League of Nations. However, official confirmation was lacking of the widespread belief that Premier Benito Mussolini had decided on such action, often reported im minent since the League enforced sanctions against Italy during the Ethiopian war. Diplomats speculated as to whether withdrawal from the League—if it comes—would mean II Duce had given up hope of coming to terms with Britain and France over his African conquests and his position in the Mediterranean Sea. Some diplomats expressed belief Mussolini had cast in his lot whole heartedly with Germany and Japan, both resigned from the League and both recently linked with Italy in the Rome tripartite anti-Communist pact. Is Original Member. (Japan resigned from the League in 1933 because of the League's con demnation of her conquest of Man churia and establishment of the "in dependent” state of Manchukuo. Ger many withdrew in 1935. claiming she was not accorded equal rights with other powers. (At Geneva, the possibility that II Duce would follow his boycott of the League by resigning formally was seen in League circles as springing from his desire to place Italy upon the same footing as other members of the ‘‘Rome-Berlin-Tokio axis." (Italy is an "original” member of the League. Her brilliant jurist, the late Vittorio Scialoja, sat with Wood row Wilson at the conference table in Paris when the League covenant was compiled. (Since the League's Ethiopian war sanctions against Italy Mussolini has boycotted both the League and the International Labor Organization.) Diplomats recalled recent authori tative press attacks which said blunt ly that the democracies were trying to strangle the totalitarian govern ments. Some of these were believed to have come from Mussolini's own pen. Equal Basis With Hitler. It also was suggested that II Duce desired to put himself on an equal basis with Germany in case of nego tiations with Britain. For Germany, not being a League member, 1s in a position to use that fact to get con cessions from Britain in return for her consent to rejoin. Other important business was on the calendar for the supreme Fascist body at its Saturday meeting, but the announcement that its decision will be read from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia, II Duce’s official residence, aroused belief it would be of international character. The last time a Grand Council de cision has been made public in this manner was at the time of the foun- j dation of the Italian Empire following the Ethiopian conquest. A report discussed in diplomatic circles was that the council might declare the present Chamber of Depu ties replaced by a- corporative cham ber, as has been contemplated some time. “SHOP EARLY” APPEAL TO MEN IS ADVISED Women Said to Be Quick to Buy, | While Husbands and Brothers Delay Gift Purchasing. Recalling facts revealed last year in ft study of December shopping ten dencies, Edward D. Shaw, secretary of the Merchants and Manufacturers’ Association, today advised merchants to direct their appeals for earlier Christmas buying almost exclusively to men. “Women are much more expert in shopping and, of course, devote much more attention to the subject,” said Mr. Shaw. “As a result, when the Stores finally decided to meet the de mand for earlier gift-buying, and ar ranged to display their Christmas •tocks earlier in the holiday season, th* adeptAwomen shoppers were quick to take advantage of the opportunity. “lAst year’s figures show, however, that the sweep of the new movement ha* failed to penetrate the conscious ness of most men." -.
