The National Lumber Manufac turers’ Association reported today that the lumber industry for the week end ing January 22 showed slight gains in production and shipments over the previous week. However, totals were below the corresponding week a year ago. Production from 504 mills was 128, 551.000 feet of hard and soft wood combined, shipments totaled 157,853, 000 feet and orders were booked for 177.936.000 feet. STEEL PRODUCTION DECLINES! WEEK Output Is Off 2.2 Points to ^ 30.5% of Capacity After A Weeks’ Climb. By the Associated Press* NEW YORK, Jan. 31.—Operations in the steel industry for the current week declined 2.2 points to 30.5 per cent of capacity, compared with 32.7 per cent last week, the American Iron and Steel Institute estimated today. A month ago operations averaged 25.6 per cent of capacity, while a year ago the rate was 79.6 per cent, The dip in the estimated rate fol lowed four consecutive weeks of ex pansion in operations from the three year low of 19.2 per cent in the final week of 1937. This figure was reached after a drop of unprecedented severity from above 80 per cent of capacity in September.
