I A T ACTIVITY REVIVES AT STEEL PLANTS Ingot Rate Up 2 Points, at Highest Mark Since Mid-November. By th« Associated Press. NEW YORK. March 23.—The Na tion's steel mills, with operations up 2 points this week to 34 per cent of capacity, are producing ingots at the highest rate since mid-November, Iron Age reported today. “Probably for the first time since the first half of 1937 orders are run ning in excess of shipments,” the pub lication added. "While this change of trend is too small to be highly significant, the in dustry derives some encouragement from even a minor release from the stalemate of recent months. • • * "That much of the current buying is a logical seasonal development is indicated, however, by the fact that the sudden arrival of spring weather throughout the country has expanded sales of wire products, particularly wire fencing, more than any other class of steel products. "As an example, an outstanding wire manufacturing unit has increased its operations from 21 per cent two weeks ago to 33 per cent this week. Much of the buying of wire products has come from farm areas, where considerable frozen buying power might be released if general conditions affecting the farmers’ markets were more favorable. The farm equipment industry is con tributing more support to the Chicago steel industry, on a relative basis, than any other branch of the steel consum ing field." Lack of substantial buying of steel by the automobile industry and the railroad industry are “keenest disap pointments" to steel makers, it was said. A small decline in steel scrap at Pittsburgh lowered the Iron Age scrap composite price to *13.54 this week, a drop of 4 cents from last week. American Metal Market said the recent pick-up in steel mill opera tions is greater “than can be ac counted for by seasonal influences, considering that buying is only for the promptest deliveries possible." Depleted buyers' stocks are pointed to by the trade paper as an explana tion for increased orders from agricul tural areas for merchant wire prod ucts. Such buying, however, it says, "is not large in proportion to the aggregate of all steel products.” Some orders for rails are reported over the last fortnight, but “for press ing necessities only.” I 1 ■■ —— ■ ■ ■ ■' a Washington Produce BUTTER—DC score, l-pound prints. 34; tub. 33; ‘.-pound prims. 3ft; fm score, l-pound prints, 33; tub, 32; ‘/.-pnund prints. 34.
