PROTECTION IN GAS
Citizens Have Aid of Tear Chemicals in
Facing Criminals—Weapons Made
for Law-Enforcement Use.

VJLTHEN a pretty young Montgomery
County matron recently let a
huge purse-snatcher have a cloud of
tear gas she mysteriously was carry
ing in her hand smack in the face,
she not only sent the robber scamper
ing off, howling in pain, but she also
landed on page 1 as the heroine of
the day, and instigated a lot of curi
osity about this modem non-lethal
defensive weapon. ,
Tear gas, sprung upon an amazed
world in the sodden fields of Flanders
and France, in recent years has be
come more closely identified in the
public mind with the arts of peace,
when these become involved in strikes
and similar civil turmoil, than with
war. But the numerous ramifications
of its employment are little compre
hended outside the circles of those
whose duty it is to unleash its power
over rioting mobs.
In the instance just beyond the
District line in which an otherwise ]
defenseless woman overcame what'
seemed to be impossible odds against
her by spraying an assailant with
tear-compelling fumes, her weapon
was a tear-gas gun of the fountain pen
type. This little cylinder, which she
had clutched in her list for just such
an emergency, contained a single
cartridge filled with tear gas in solid
form. Discharged with a trigger, cor
responding somewhat to the clip of a
fountain pen, it instantly covers any
object in front of it with such a cloud
of disabling gas that, in this case, the
panlcstrlcken victim of it ran away
screaming he had been blinded.

TNQUIRY discloses that a manufac
turing concern which pioneered in
introducing fountain pen tear-gas
guns in Washington some time back
has discontinued the production. This
step was dictated, asserts the com
pany’s representative here, by absence
of fully satisfactory results at all
times. A major drawback, he ex
plained, is the possibility of this type
of tear-gas gun going off at wrong
times and places. Their close re
semblance to fountain pens, he said,
created a hazard should they fall Into
the hands of persons, particularly
children, unaware of their true pur
pose or untutored in their proper
operation.
But these circumstances by no
means seriously circumscribe the use
of tear-gas weapons for defense. And
a little exploration of the market re
veals a truly astonishing variety of
methods which have been developed
through the years for the employment
of tear gas by police officers of all
kinds, public and private, and guards
of prisons, insane asylums and other
institutions, and to a growing extent
by private citizens for the protection
of their persons and property.
Several types of tear-gas equipment
vie for supremacy in this field, and one
of the strongest contenders for top
billing is a pocket-sized billy, which
combines the double threat of an or
dinary blackjack and a tear-gas pistol
or rifle. It is widely used by law-en
forcement officers, watchmen, guards,
messengers and householders. Thirty
thousand of these weapons are said
to be in the pockets of Treasury and
other governmental agency guards and
police. Thir billy comes in two forms,
a spray type for use at close quarters
uid a blast type which fills a wide
area with noxious, blinding gas.
'J'HERE are three other oustanding
methods of using tear gas that
are employed extensively throughout
the country. There is, for Instance,
the gas riot gun, somewhat resembling
a submachine gun or sawed-off shot
gun. Then there is the orlnary re
volver from which shells containing
CN (tear gas> or CN-DM <a mixture
of tear gas and sickening gas) may be
shot. CN is designed for ordinary
riots and other civil disturbance or
barricaded criminals.
