NEW TEST CHECKS MUSCLES OF EVE Unexplained Troubles Are Cleared Up if Blind Is Worn a Week. Ty the Associated Press. SYRACUSE, N. Y., April 9.—A new eye test that clears up unexplained headaches, indigestion, insomnia and even loss of memory "was described here today in an ophthalmological paper. The test discloses muscular defects 1 in the eyes which escape detection in usual examinations. It has been used on several thou sand persons by F. W. Marlow, M. D.. and is reported in the archives of * ophthalmology of the American Medi- | cal Association. r Dr. Marlow covers one eye of a pa tient, and observes whether the other turns slightly, like a searchlight changing its direction. This much of the test is routine and known as oc -culsion. The new part is to keep one eye covered for a week, instead of for a moment or a few minutes. During the week the other eye has to do all the seeing. The result is that the single eye frequently makes a change in direc-. tion of looking which is not detectable in a short examination. Take Natural Position. This change in direction. Dr. Mar low explains, m'-ans that the muscles of that eye have assumed their natu ral position. It means also that when both eyes were used, those muscles were under strain to keep the eye "pointed" par allel to the direction of seeing in the , other eye. About 97 persons out of every 100 have this eve conflict. Dr. Marlow finds. Yet thev seldom know it. even when the muscular strain seriously affects their comfort or health. Evidence that, acute poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis) can be treated by injection of a hypotonic salt solu tion into the blood stream has been found in a series of experiments, first on monkeys and later on humans, bv Dr. George M. Retan. of the College of Medicine. Syracuse University. These experiments, started in 1935, cover a three-year span. “This hypotonic salt solution (low ♦alt content) has been used success fully in the treatment of acute polio myelitis. acute encephalitis, (sleeping sickness) and syphillis of the central nervous system. Future experience may also show that it may be of ad vantage for treatment of streptococcus and meiningococcus meningitis,” Dr. ,,Retan said in reviewing the results of his experiments. As a result of his long-range study, Dr. Rot an published the following conclusions: All Cases Recovered. 1. Ten cases of respiratory paralysis were treated, all of which recovered. Improvement in respiratory function occurred during actual treatment pe riod, The behavior of this group shows that the use of the respirator may become unnecessary in the fu ture management of this type of paralysis. 2. Six cases of paralysis of the throat recovered promptly. All cases so treated were able to drink fluids following the first treatment. 3. Both of the above groups carry a mortality rate of around 50 per cent. While the group treated (57) is scarcely large enough for statistical evaluation, it included 16 cases with recovery in each instance. The pre paralytic group included in the re port were all cases in which the disease was sufficiently severe that paralysis might be a reasonable ex pectancy. 4. This treatment will not in every Instance prevent the development of paralysis. Respiratory paralysis will yield to the treatment, however. Muscle Weakness Checked. 5. Weakness of the muscles of the extremities, without actual paralysis. 1ms promptly improved and reflexes often return following treatment, which have not responded to stimuli before treatment was given. 6. Actual paralysis of the muscles of the extremities does not improve. However, treatment of this group is advised if the case is active, with hope of preventing further loss of function. 7. Prevention of paralysis and death in rhesus monkeys infected with many times the lethal dose of Virus was possible. He was assisted by Dr. George Lape of Binghamton and Dr. Hugh Leavell of Louisville. Commenting further, Dr. Retan : said: "Although we recognize the futility ; of anv attempt to regenerate a nerve I cell after it has been destroyed, I be ! lieve that our evidence tends to sub stantiate the theory that the severity of the inflammatory reaction in the j central nervous system can b? reduced by the use of these hypotonic salt j solutions.” H ■ i___ PEM-CRAFT | CUSTOM MADE VENETIAN BUNDS Henry Fonda, Joan Bennett and Alan Marehall in "/ Met My Love Again” SAVE THE DIFFERENCE—BUY DIRECT FROM FACTORY TO YOU 7 Day Delivery 0,<l" Each Window Measured to the Fraction of the Inch I CALL REPUBLIC 0550 FOR ESTIMATES Our Blinds Are Fully Guaranteed THE ONLY VENETIAN BLIND FACTORY IN THE DISTRICT Visit Our Showroom in Our Factory.
