EDITORS TO MEET HERE IS WEEK Newspaper Problems and Means of Improvement on Program. Newspaper problems and means of * Improving editorial standards and technique will occupy editors and managing editors from all over the country when they meet here Thurs day, Friday and Saturday for the 16th annual convention of the Amer ican Society of Newspaper Editors. Sessions will be held at the National Press Club. Speakers will include Dr. James B. Conant, president of Harvard Uni versity: Dr. William A. Eddy, presi dent of Hobart College; Carl W. Ack erman, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia Univer sity; Harold L. Cross, secretary of the New York Herald Tribune; Kenneth E. Olson, dean of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern Univer sity: Msrk M. Jones, consulting econ omist, of Akron, Ohio, and H. O. Cris ler. head football coach at the Uni versity of Michigan. President Cites Policy. In announcing yesterday plans for the convention the society's president, Alfred H. Kirrhhofer, managing editor of the Buffalo Evening News, said: •'Since its inception in 1923 the so ciety has been concerned with the Improvement of editorial standards and practices. The 1938 meeting will continue the same policy, analyzing problems of the day, so we can see more clearly and act more wisely toward achieving the 'just aspirations of American journalism,’ which the 1 founders set forth as the objective of the society.” At the opening session at 2 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Kirchhofer and other officers will deliver their annual re- ! ports and Dean Olson will speak on ‘ Raising the Standards of Schools of Journalism.” At 9 p.m. delegates will have an off-the-record interview with Presi dent Roosevelt at the White House. A similar conference with Undersec- ; retarv of State Sumner Wells will be 1 held at the State Department at 11 am. Friday. Clinic on Responsibilities. Friday's sessions will include a round table discussion of shop prob lems and a clinic on responsibilities of the press. Current criticism of news . Papers will be analysed and their con structive work considered. Grove Pat terson. editor of the Toledo Blade, will present a restatement of the aims and Ideals of the society. At 7 p.m. Friday Eugene Meyer, publisher of the Washington Post, and Mrs. Meyer will entertain members and their wives at a buffet supper at thPlr home. The woman's page will be discussed at the Saturday morning session, with talks by Malvina Lindsay, woman's ed- 1 Jtnr of the Washington Post; Mary Stow, woman's feature editor of the Newark News, and Alice Coulter of Norwich- N. Y. Miles W. Vaughn, night manager of the New York office of the United Pres. . will sp<-ak on covering the Japanese-Chincse war, and H R. Elkins, United Press cor respondent, will discuss "Trends in the Orient.” The convention will close with a luncheon at the Willard Hotel at 12:45 p.m Saturday. President Eddy of Ho bart will speak on "Ridding Public Opinion of Superstition.” and Coach Crisler will discuss “The Press and Athletics.” $37,000 FUND INDORSED FOR CHANNEL ROCK JOB Engineers Soon Will Start Work on Removing Barriers in * i I Harbor Project. The War Department yesterday made available a fund of $37,000 for the removal of rocks in the Virginia channel of the Washington Harbor w hich constitute a menace to naviga tion. Under earlier allotted funds the channels In the Washington Harbor are to be deepened to 24 feet. The funds approved yesterday are in j addition to $40,000 already made available. Work on the rock removal in the Virginia channel is to be started soon by the United States engineers for this district. There are a great many rocks above the 24-foot depth, it was said, between the Arlington Memorial Bridge and Easbvs Point, which is at the foot of E street N.W. S. A. E. Dance Is Held.
