■ MADRID LIFELINE
Claim Advance of 5 Miles
Through Gap in Lines
of Loyalists.
By the Associated Press.
HENDAYE, France, May 7.—Span
ish Insurgents tore a gap through gov
ernment defenses In Eastern Spain
today and advanced 5 miles nearer
the "lifeline" highway link between
Madrid and the Mediterranean ports
of Castellon de la Plana and Valencia.
Insurgent commanders reported the
government line was broken 40 miles
north and sligntly to the west of
Castellon, where they captured the
town of Portell, deep in the pocket
protecting the government's central
coast lines.
Official advices said the town was
taken by troops of Insurgent Gen.
Garcia Valino pushing on to the
southwest from Cinctorres, a village
they raptured yesterday.
Co-ordinated with this movement
was a drive directly south by insurgent
costal columns. Valencia and Cas
tellon were the object of both opera
tions
The double thrust to broaden the
insurgent foothold on the eastern
roast and close two gateways for sup
plies into the larger of the two seg
ments of government territory broke
the curving front of the defenders
from Teruel eastward to the sea.
Insurgent dispatches reported heavy
government losses as a coastal column
driving south toward Castellon routed
Gen. Jose Mia.ja's "milicianos" from
mountain positions at bayonet point.
The defenders tried to slip through
the advancing insurgent line but Gen.
Franco's machine gunners drove them
back into the shelter of olive orchards
on the terraced farms that formed
the battleground.

LONDON, May 7.—Britain and
France edged into Adolf Hitler * "fam

Diplomats of the two nations urged

France were not in a warning mood
today.
They were not surprised at reports
from Rome that Premier Benito Mus
solini of Italy had promised the Ger
man Fuerher a free hand In the cam
paign for the 3,500,000 Germans in
Czechoslovakia.
Mussolini was portrayed in Rome
dispatches as pledging at the same
time to bring diplomatic pressure to
bear upon the Czechoslovak govern
ment to be reasonable in meeting Ger
man demands.
But Britain and France felt that Just
now II Duce may help to keep peace
ful the attempts to settle Czechoslo
vak-German differences and they did
not want to arouse Der Peuhrer to an
angry, decision to strike with force.
Sir Bamual Hoare, home secretary,
summed up Britain's official idea when
he told a Rotarian conference at
Blackpool that democracies, by facing
facts, could live and flourish by the
side of “Juggernauts.”
By facing facts, the British govern
ment means the realization that Ger
many must be satisfied in Central
Europe by every possible, Just and
peaceful means.
