Republic 8816. k MRS. IRENE HOLMES FATALLY STRICKEN Teacher at Takoma Park (D. C.) School Was Supervising Recreation Period at Time. Stricken with a heart attack while supervising her pupils’ recreation period on the school playground, Mrs. Irene K. Holmes. 61, a teacher at the Takoma Park (D. C.) Elementary School for more than 20 years, died yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Holmes was carried to the principal's office and was pronounced dead by a Takoma Park physician. A native of Washington and a graduate of Central High School and Wilson Normal School, Mrs. Holmes had taught for many years in the District of Columbia. However, she resided at 120 Maple avenue, Takoma Park. Md. Surviving are two sons. Thomas J. Holmes, assistant principal at East ern High School, and Donald C. Holmes, an employe at the Library of Congress. Funeral services are to be held at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the Trinity Episcopal Church, in Ta koma Park, and burial is to be in Rock Creek Cemetery. MRS. MELNICOVE DEAD; FORMER LACE MAKER Native of Russia Had Lived Here for 55 Years—Funeral Services Tomorrow. Mrs. Rachel Melnicove, 76, of 3521 Sixteenth street N.W, formerly in the lace business in the old Center Market for 35 years, died yesterday in the Washington Sanitarium, Takoma Park, Md., after a long illness. A native of Russia, Mrs. Melnicove had been a resident of this city for 55 years. She came here from Phila delphia. Surviving are her husband, Jacob Melnicove. retired tin merchant; a daughter. Mrs. Joseph Ottenberg: two grandsons, Dr. Gilbert Ottenberg. physician, and Melvin Ottenberg, and three great-grandchildren. The body was placed in a vault in Cedar Hill Ceme tery, pending burial later in Palo Alto, Calif. Mrs. Brasch was the wife of Fred erick E. Brasch. chief of the Smith sonian Division of the Library of Con gress. Besides her husband she leaves a son, Maxwell F. Brasch of Washing ton; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth E. Mulford, Wilmington, Del., and one grandchild. A native of Nova Scotia, Mrs. Brasch lived here about 14 years. FUNERAL RITES TODAY FOR MRS. Funeral services for Mrs. Susanna Hesen, 77. who died Thursday at her home, 2421 Third street N.E., were held yesterday, with requiem high mass in St. Martin's Catholic Church, following services at the residence. Services were held at the home by the Columbia Division of the Grand International Auxiliary, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, in which Mrs. Hesen had been prominent, and by the Blessed Virgin Sodality of St. Martin's Catholic Church. Verdicts of accidental death were returned by a coroner's Jury yesterday in two traffic fatalities. The victims were William H. Gough, 65. of 3825 M street N.W.. who died Friday night from injuries received Tuesday when struck by an automo bile near his home, and Newton C. GIRL BOUND IN HOUSE Attacker Represented Himself as ‘the Gas Man.’ Police today were searching for a man who seized and bound a 12-year old girl in the basement of her home in the 3900 block of Benton street N. W. yesterday, after gaining en trance to the house by posing as "the gas man.” The girl told police her assailant was frightened away when the front doorbell rang. ....—— AGREES TO CLAIM The Senate agreed yeesterday to pay Lester P. The action, which also must re ceive the approval of the House, was in accordance with findings of the Court of Claims OLD PERSIAN BINDING STOLEN FROM LIBRARY 17th Century Book Part Taken From Congressional Display Not Highly Prized. A brazen thief who made off with a 17th century Persian book binding from the Library of Congress was being hunted by police today. William C. Boyd, superintendent of the library, reported the binding was taken some time Sunday after an exhi bition case had been pried open. Apparently the vandal knew little or nothing about the relative values of other bindings in the case, since the binding he took was less highly prized than the others, although more ornate. The binding is said to have only nominal value. Police were asked to check the city's bookstores, in the belief an attempt might be made to sell the binding. DANCER ‘GROWS UP’ Roberta Jonay Says ‘Little Girl’ Routines Are in Past. Roberta Jonay. the 22-year-old Florida professional dancer who last year was a guest of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, danced at the annual White House press party and later accompanied her hostess on several inspection tours of Government projects, returned to town last night announcing that as a dancer she has grown up.” She explained that formerly she did “nice little girl routines.” Now, she says, each of her numbers tells a definite type of story. Guests at a hotel entertainment saw her depict a magazine cartoon character, dem onstrate her idea of the connection between 'big apple” steps and the motions of a bird dance, and perform a graceful waltz. Malm Craig, chief of staff of the Army, this morning accepted on behalf of the War Department 44 medals to be awarded this year to the outstanding students of the Citizens' Military Training Camps throughout the country. Orchestra Plays Under ‘Phoney’ Moon as Outdoor Season Beopens. To swing-time tunes, 250 couples, most of them of high school age, scuffed their shoes on the asphalt and admired a "phoney” appearing moon last night as street dancing was re newed here. The dancing was made possible by the Office of National Capital Parks and the scene was set on a roped-off section of the Ellipse roadway, be tween Fifteenth and Seventeenth streets N.W. Aside from the wear and tear on shoe leather, there were no incidents, the dance going oft without a "hitch” as the big-applers, truckers, shaggers and those seized with acute-inventive ness fell under the spell of Bob Mer chant's District W. P. A. Orchestra, which played for two hours from a truck.
