George Hawkins Dies at Residence Of Heart Attack Formerly Was Prominent Official of Geological/ Survey Maj. George T. Hawkins, 75, U. S. A., retired, a former prominent offi cial of the United States Geological Survey, died suddenly yesterday of a Mai. Hawkins. heart attack at his home, 1616 Sixteenth street N.W. Funeral serv ices will be held at 11 a.m. Mon day at the Fort Myer Chapel. Burial with full military honors will be in Arling ton National Cemetery. Born in Han nibal. Mo., Au gust 2 0. 1863. Ms). Hawkins joined the Geological Survey in July, 1884, where he was associated, ex cept for a period of Army service, until his retirement July 1, 1933. A pioneer in the Geological Survey, Maj. Hawkins is credited with intro ducing the methods of transit tra verse now used by the survey for the control of topographic mapping. During his early service with the survey, Maj. Hawkins worked on as signments in nearly every State in the Union. At the time of his re tirement he was chief of the section of computing in the topographic branch of the Geological Survey. Maj. Hawkins’ service with the Geological Survey was interrupted on June 15, 1917, when he was com missioned major in the Engineer Officers’ Reserve Corps. As an Army officer he trained younger officers who were embarking for Prance In survey methods used in military mapping and artillery orientation. A member of the Cosmos Club, Maj. Hawkins was in good health until his recent illness, spending much of his time on short automo bile trips and visiting the scenes of his earlier days with the Geological Survey. He Is survived by his wife, the former Norma Blanchard Fuller. Jamaica Is shipping over twice as much coffee abroad as a year ago. Hearst's Collection Of Antiques Sold P» the Associated Press. NEW York. Nov. IS.—The sale of William Randolph Hearst's col lection of early American furniture and Staffordshire ware began yes terday with 191 items bringing $18,802.50. A Sheraton inlaid^ mahogany, maple and birch secretary, made in about 1800, brought $950, the top price for a single piece. A Queen Anne walnut veneered, inlaid and shell-carved highboy, an 18th-cen tury New England piece, was sold for $725. The highest price paid for Staf fordshire ware was $370 for a dark blue platter depicting the Esplanade and Castle Garden of New York.
