Eugene V. Brewster,
'Grand Smatterer'
And Publisher, Dies
Film Magazine Pioneer
Lost $3,000,000 Fortune;
Had Many Vocations
Bs tht Associated Press.
NEW YORK. an. 2.—Eugene Val- (
entine Brewster, 67. pioneer in the
motion picture magazine held that
netted him a fortune, and self
styled “grand smatterer,” died yes- !
terday of heart disease.
His varied understakings included
law. newspaper columning, scenario
writing, book writing and painting.
The first indication ot his prolific
attributes was in 1892, when he was
named “boy orator” of the Grover
Cleveland campaign.
He often was erroneously identi
fied as the hero of a popular novel,
“Brewster's Millions.” written be
fore he made his first fortune. But
he did write “Brewster's Millions,
How He Made Them, How He Lost
Them, and How They Could Have
Been Saved." Once he estimated
his wealth at $3,000,000.
Three years ago he was living in
a furnished room in Brooklyn, seek
ing to regain his lost fortune by
writing.
He was married four times, first
to Emilie C. Churbuck of Brooklyn.
After their divorce he married
Eleanor V. V. Cator in 1916.
In 1921, when the Brewster mo
tion picture magazines was a pros
perous concern, Corliss Palmer, a
hotel cigarette girl in Macon, Ga.,
won a beauty contest, came to New
York and met Mr. Brewster.
Mrs. Brewster sued Miss Palmer
for alienation of affection and was
awarded $200,000. She also got a
divorce and in 1926 Miss Palmer
became the third Mrs. Brewster.
They were divorced in 1933. Two
years later he married Liane Hill.
All his former wives, with three
children by his first wife and a son
by his second wife, survive.
A Princeton graduate Mr. Brewster
turned first to law and writing. In
1911 he launched Motion Picture
magazine, forerunner of the other
Brewster magazines, which included
Motion Picture Classic. Movie
Monthly. Beauty and Shadowdand.
Complex litigation led to the sale
in 1926 of the magazine properties.

DI BARI. MADELINE. In sad bu; lov- j
ing remembrance of my dear mother
MADELINE DI BARI, who departed this !
life one year ago today. January 2. 1938.
You suffered hours, yes. hours of pain.
To wait for cure but all in vain:
Till God above knew what was best.
He called you home to give you rest.
We never thought when you left home
That you never would return:
That you so soon in death would sleep
And leave us here to mourn.
The blow was hard, the shock severe.
We never thought your death so near;
Only those who have lost can tell
The Dain of parting without farewell.
Our hearts still ache with sadness.
Our eyes shed many a tear:
God only knows how we miss you
At, the end of our sad year.
We do not know the pain you bore.
We did not see you die:
We only know you went away
And did not say good-by.
Somewhere, when our work is finished.
With .ioy we shall meet you on that beau
„ tiful shore of rest and peace.

To heal thy wound;
In tfiv Redeemer's bleeding side
That balm alone is found.
In hidden anguish of the soul.

The sigh that rends that aching breast.
