Annual Navy Relief Ball
Will Be Outstanding
Shrove Season Event
Mrs. Roosevelt Heads Patronesses
For Benefit on February 21;
Many Parties Arranged
The Navy relief ball, which will be held Tuesday night, February 21,
In the Sail Loft at the Navy Yard, will be the outstanding event of the
Shrove season and already the naval officers, their wives and the Navy
Juniors are taking active part in planning for the gala affair, and for
many parties which will precede the dance. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt
heads the list of patronesses for the ball, which is for the benefit of the
widows and orphans of the enlisted men and officers of the Navy.

retary of tlie Navy; Mrs. Charles Edison, wife of the Assistant Secretary

Mrs. George T. Pettingill, wife of Rear Admiral Pettenglll. the com

Returns to Norfolk
Lt. Max O. Witherbee. United
States Coast and Geodetic Survey,
and Mrs. Witherbee have returned to
their home in Norfolk, Va., following
a four-day visit with Lt. and Mrs.
Charles Keith Green in Livingstone
Heights.
Wednesday evening Lt. and Mrs.
Witherbee were the honor guests
at a dinner party given by Comdr.
and Mrs. George W. Cowie in their
home in Washington.
Col. R. V. Read
Leaves on Tour
Col. R. V. Read, the Military At
tache of the British Embassy, left
the Capital yesterday on an official
visit to Cuba. Costa Rica, Panama,
Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Re
public and Puerto Rico, and will be
away until about the middle of
March. On his return to Washing
ton he will continue to reside at the
Shoreham.
Goes to Kelly Field
Mrs. C. L. Tinker, wife of Col.
Tinker, left today for Kelly Field,
San Antonio, Tex., to attend the
graduation of her son. Cadet C. L.
Tinker, Jr„ from the flying school.
Mrs. Tinker expects to be away a
week.
MISS AGNES MAGRUDER,
Who was presented early in the xvinter by her parents, Comdr.
John H. Magruder, jr„ U. S. N., and Mrs. Magruder. Miss Magru
der is chairman of the Debutantes’ Committee for the Navy
Relief Ball, which this year will be a Mardi Gras event, on
Shrove Tuesday, February 21. This year the committee has
arranged to give the ball in the sail loft at the Navy Yard,
xvhere this annual benefit to aid the work among the xvidoxcs
and orphans of officers and enlisted men was held during the

Midshipmen Will Attend
Services in Cathedral
Society of Navy Sponsors Also
Will Be Present Next Sunday;
Meetings Being Arranged
Ninety midshipmen will come from Annapolis Sunday. February 5,
to take part in the annual patriotic service which will be held that after
noon at 4 o'clock in the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul. The service
will be attended by members of the Society of Navy Sponsors, who will
be in Washington for the annual meetings of the society, which will be
held next week. The midshipmen have been given leave from the Naval
Academy to attend the service and are not required to be back at their
posts until 9 o'clock that evening. Their part in the service will be the
usual singing, which is inspiring.

Attends Conferences.
Mrs. Russell C. Langdon of New York, who is president, Of the so
ciety, has been in Washington during the past w-eek attending the con
ferences on national defense to which she was a delegate representing
the Society of Sponsors. She will return here the end of this week
preparatory to the sponsors' meetings. Mrs. Henry Williams and Mrs.
Emory Scott Land, both of Washington, are the vice presidents, and Mrs.
Stanton R. Norman, also of this city, is secretary-treasurer.

The Society of Sponsors, which
was organized in 1908 and incor
porated in 1920. is divided into four
divisions, of which Mrs. Larz Ander
son of Brookline, Mass., and Wash
ington is chairman of the Northeast
ern Chapter; Mrs. Buist Rivers of
Charleston, S. C„ chairman of the
Southeastern; Mrs. Charles Tudor of
Cincinnati, chairman of the North
western, and Mrs. Herbert H. James
of Los Angeles, chairman for the
Southwestern.
Mrs. Edward Stafford, famous as
the "Snow Baby,” is one of the spon
sors living in Washington. She
christened the destroyer Peary,
which was named for her father, the
late Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary,
U. S. N„ who dfscovered the North
Pole. Other sponsors who live in

who christened a destroyer bearing
the name of her father, the late

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Jan. 28.—A
hop tonight with an informal dance,
basketball and other athletic events,
all in Dahlgren Hall, were the main
attractions for this week end at
the Naval Academy.
Rear Admiral and Mrs. Wilson
Brown gave a luncheon Sunday at
the superintendent’s quarters.
At the wedding today of Miss
Henrietta Crosley, daughter of Prof,
and Mrs. Joseph Crosley, and Lt.
Griswold Terry Atkins, son of Capt.
and Mrs. Arthur Atkins, which took
place at 4:30 o'clock at the Naval
Academy Chapel, Mrs. John D. Winn
of Little Neck, Long Island, sister of
the bride was the matron of honor.
The bridesmaids were Mrs. Valk
Kneeland and Miss Julia Norman of
Annapolis, Mrs. Turner Slaughter
of Front Royal, Va„ and Miss Agnes

who received the wdves of the officers who are on the maneuvers in
Puerto Rico.
• Mrs. Samuel M. Harrington, wife of Col. Harrington, who is execu
tive officer of the 1st Brigade, received with Mrs. Williams and Mrs.
Strobhar.
Mrs. Williams and her mother plan to leave the post around the

WEST POINT. N. Y.. Jan. 28 —
Maj. Clare H Armstrong, who Is
spending a day or so in New York,
was among those who attended the
113th anniversary of the Old Guard
ball, held at the Hotel Commodore in
New York last evening. Others from
here who attended the ball in
cluded Maj. Alexander H. Camp
bell and Lt. James L. Grier.
Lt. and Mrs. Edwin G. Griffith
are spending several days in West
bury, Long Island, as guests of
the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Pope, and were among
the guests at the Old Guard ball.
Lt. and Mrs. Edward B. Hemp
stead, who were also numbered
among those present at the Old
Guard ball, are spending the week
end in New York as guests of Mrs.
Hempstead’s brother-in-law and
sister, Mr. and Mrs. John M. B.
Howard. Mrs. Hempstead's mother,
Mrs. Ernest J. King, wife of Vice
Admiral King. U. S. N., who is in
command of the U. S. S. Lexing
ton, at present on maneuvers with
the fleet in Southern waters, and
her brother, Mr. Joseph King of
Coronado, Calif., will arrive at West
Point Tuesday after a cross-coun
try motor trip from the West Coast.
