Mr. and Mrs. George Grant Mason, jr., entertained at dinner Saturday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Luce, with more guests coming in later in the evening. Jane Mason, who looks after each individual guest in a very charming manner, wore a little-girl frock of multicolored print, the skirt being pinned up in front to show a beautifully hand-embroidered white petticoat which must have been a family heirloom. She wore her hair in what we call "finger curls,” the kind your mother made to decorate her darling by brushing locks around her finger. The house was filled with beautifully arranged masses of pink or white flowers—roses, lilies and gladioli. Mrs. Luce, the famous Clare Boothe, author of "The Women” and "Kiss the Boys Good-By,” is so ravishingly beautiful, so gently sweet and daintily feminine that you simply can't believe she's clever as well. We feel that Fate has been very unfair to shower so many gifts on one woman, but we are grateful to the lovely Clare for acting just like a mortal and not dazzling us with them all at once. She wore a filmy black lace gown whose formal decollete was topped by a matching lace bertha around her shoulders. Her jewels were rubies and diamonds, and in the back of her softly rolled-up blond hair nestled a bow of black ribbon. Another fascinating blond was Mrs. Drew Pearson, in fuchsia taffeta , with big puffed sleeves, and still another was Mrs. Northam Griggs in pale blue. Stunning Mrs. Jock Whitney did great credit to the brunettes and, in true "Gone With the Wind” style, had brought along a retainer in the ■ person of a plump little colored boy dressed gaily in Turkish trousers, slippers and turban. He appeared very pleased with life as he made himself useful and he certainly added an element of surprise when you came on him around a corner. Handsome Mrs. Thomas Burke was there in gold and scarlet lame, full of enthusiasm over her flight in the giant Yankee Clipper that day. Mrs. John Hanes wore a simple white crepe gown, very effective with her dark beauty. Mrs. George T. Summerlin, jr., wore blade velvet witn gardenias at the neckline and had changed her ‘'hair-do'’ from an “up" one to one parted on the side and rolled smoothly all around. Mrs. George Garrett was as pretty as a picture in a rose-red gown made on Grecian lines with jeweled bands crossed on the bodice. Others enjoying the evening and listening to piano music of an entertainer provided by our hostess were Mr. and Mrs. C. Matthews Dick, Mrs. Kent Legare, Harold Horan, the Undersecretary of the Treasury, John W. Hanes; Drew Pearson, Arthur Krock, Thomas Burke, chief of the ; Communications Division of the State Department; Mr. and Mrs. Creighton Peet, the latter pretty and quaint in a black robe de style with an enormous j gold brooch; Northam L. Griggs, private secretary to Mr. Jefferson Caffery, our Ambassador to Brazil; the Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Harry Hopkins; Col. Francis Harrington, Attorney General Frank Murphy, Christopher Bramwell of the British Embassy. George Duca of the Ru manian Legation, and Jose de Lasa of the Cuban Embassy. We caught a glimpse of popular Mrs. Emory Sands at cocktail time on Saturday. She is down from New York for a few' days And looked very smart in a black crepe dress and a matching jacket with velvet lapels. Her spring hat was a little black straw one trimmed with a bunch of red roses. We also saw Mrs. Warren Delano Robbins, who will give a dinner for Mrs. Sands on Wednesday; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Southgate. Ralph Hill and Stewart McDonald, back from a holiday in Florida and looking very fit and sunburned. * * * * Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dewey will spend a few days here this week as guests of Mrs. Kent Legare. * * * * Tinsley Garnett, jr., has flown to Havana with his father, the former District Attorney. * * * * AND, BY THE WAY— ■We hear that Mrs. Matthew Hanna, so well liked in Washington, has | taken an apartment in New York at Hampshire House. the winter at the Hotel St. Dennis, i The senior Mr. Schmid will return I home with his son and daughter-in law.
