- Polish Controversy With Germany Covers More Than Free City Return of Danzig Would Not Solve General European Crisis By DEWITT MACKENZIE, Associated Press Foreign Affairs Writer. NEW YORK. Aug. 17.—The grav est aspect of the Danzig trouble is that, even if Poland could bring her ’ self to agree to the return of the Free City to the sovereignty of the Reich, this wouldn't solve the gen eral European crisis which has * produced the “Halt Hitler” cam paign of the Anglo-French brother hood. Equally true, such a disposition of the Danzig affair wouldn't end the German-Polish controversy, which is of long standing and covers a much broader field than this col orful port of the Baltic. Danzig is just another problem ehild which has been left on Eu # rope's doorstep in the storm. What happens to Danzig, while important, /^sn't likely in itself to affect decis **' ively the trend of general affairs at this late juncture. Danzig Isolated Incident. From the viewpoint of the Anglo French bloc. Herr Hitler’s demand for the return of Danzig is merely * an isolated incident in a drive to establish politico-economic hege mony over all Europe. They feel award of Danzig to Germany would not “Halt Hitler,” but only increase the momentum of his push. The Poles charge that Hitler’s move is part of a concrete plan to crush their country and make it a vassal state. inis, men, is me position as the Anglo-French contingent and the Berlin-Rome axis line up for an other test of strength. The Nazi leader appears to be deliberately forcing a showdown on Danzig, and according to many of his followers he expects to get what he wants without fighting, as he did in the ease of Austria, Czecho-Slovakla and Memel. The situation now, however, is much more dangerous potentially than in previous instances, because both sides have reached such a point of preparedness for war that their forces are drawn up in battle array. Difficult to Gauge Battle. Because the opposing camps con stantly have been edging closer to Ie possible showdown, it is increas ingly difficult to gauge their temper However, one can say this with fair certainty: Fuehrer Hitler w-on't push his Danzig claims to the point of war Unless he feels that the time has come t-o settle once and for all the • conflict with England and France and their allies as to who's who in Europe. He isn't at all likely to force a fight over Danzig alone. The Anglo-French-Polish combine cn its part, can be expected to gc as far with concessions to Hitler as they feel possible—unless they have made up their minds that further appeasement is useless and that the hour has arrived to decide the whole European imbroglio with arms. It is quite in the cards that neither side at this moment could sa> whether it feels that the hour ha! arrived. Developments in the im mediate future may crystalize view points. Meantime the only safe predictior to make is that war isn’t inevitabli despite the widespread fiourishinj of arms. Fear Loss of Corridor. As regards the Danzig issue, in terests on both sides of the contro versy have been trying to smooth the trouble down. Mussolini is saic to have been persistently counselini Hitler to proceed with moderation. And it's reliably reported that Eng- j land and France have been urging j Poland to compromise. One difficulty the Poles face is their certain knowledge that they would have to grant Germany a right of way across the Polish Corri dor. which now separates the Reich from Danzig and German East Prussia, and their great fear is that they would lose the Corridor alto gether. This would make Poland a land locked nation by cutting it off from the Baltic. It is an old saying that he who controls the mouth of the Vistula River—that is, the port of Danzig—controls Eastern Europe. Only the other day Polish President Moscicki declared that the Corridor and seacoast were “the air and sun of our existence as a state.” The Poles also expect Germany to reach for the rich coal area of Tes chen, which Poland took over when Czecho-Slovakia was dismembered. They sum the position up by declar ing that the Germans are trying to surround them and squeeze them into servitude. Nazi Propaganda Notes Are Seized by France Bt the Associated Press. PARIS. Aug. 17.—The French gov ernment has ordered the seizure of propaganda letters from Germany urging Frenchmen to allow the Nazis a free hand in Danzig. Police, an interior ministry official said, have been authorized to open all letters bearing German post marks. They have already seized more than 20,000 letters in the Paris area, and thousands more are being confiscated throughout France dally. To avoid detection, officials said letters now are being sent in bales ! to the Netherlands and Switzerland and mailed into France. ! A SUMMER | SUCCESS Easy, quick to cook.
