Capital Banks Open Christmas Savings Clubs Tomorrow Nineteen Institutions Look for Another Rush of Subscribers By EDWARD C. STONE. Nineteen Washington banks and many others in the suburbs will open their 1940 Christmas savings clubs tomorrow, it was announced In the financial district today. The clubs will be operated under practically the same regulations as they were this year, bankers said. That means they will pay no inter est to members. Payments will be made weekly. Some banks will take as small amounts as $25 and as high as 1.000. One or two of the banks will de duct a 50-cent service charge in cases where subscribers drop out of the clubs before the year ends; in other words, before they make all their payments. This charge is to defray the cost of the bookkeeping. Banks in the Capital which will operate the 1940 clubs include the American Security & Trust Co.. An acostia Bank. Bank of Commerce & Savings, City Bank. Columbia Na tional. East Washington Savings. Hamilton National. Industrial Bank of Washington, Liberty National. McLachlen Banking Corp., Morris Plan Bank. Munsey Trust Co., Na tional Bank of Washington (Water street branch), National Savings & Trust Co., Riggs National (branches only), Second National. Security Savings & Commercial. The volume of trading in the trac tion bonds was also the largest in months, including a $13,000 sale, another $5,000 block and six $1,000 transactions. Attention w'as turned to these bonds the other day when the Capital Transit Co. directors voted to set aside $120,000 for the retire ment of bonded indebtedness, fol lowing the voting of a 50-cent dividend on the Transit stock. Anv move to retire bonds always strengthens the outstanding issues, on the theory that any reduction In the amount outstanding will help those left in the hands of investors. NEW YORK, Nov. 29—Late sell ing hit the stock market today ard leaders dropped fractiont to 3 point* or more. The dip. which began in a lazy | way about 1 o'clock, was accentuated i in the last quarter of an hour of j trading. I followed a morning rally in uhirh snmp wprp rmshpri ahpad a« I much as a point. Chrysler, which | got up that far. was about un 1 changed at the finish. Transfers approximated 700.000 j shares. i Settlement of the long and costly , labor dispute in the Chrysler plants j gave the original impetus to the mild boost which lasted throughout the forenoon. Then prices began to give way and little support was forthcoming. The day's news contained a long list of higher or extra dividend dec larations. the industrial activity rate held well and it appeared there was every reason for a better market. In London prices were steady; ] they turned irregular at Amster dam and Paris was higher with broadened trading. Brokers were at a loss to explain * reasons for the market's sluggish ; action, except to assert Wall Street was suffering from a case of the | "over blues" and seemed "devoid of ideas." j "Foreign selling,'’ said one trader, j “disguised selling and a thin mar ket of very low' volume, appear to be I responsible for the lethargy of re- . cent sessions. The will to buy has gone stale. Then, too, the specu lators are worried by a very evident lack of sponsorship.” Narrow to lower at the finish were United States Steel, ehBtlehem, Boeing, Santa Fe, Westinghouse Electric. Du Pont, Union Carbide, Johns-Manville, United States Gyp sum. American Telephone, Owens Illinois, Goodrich and Air Reduc tion. More resistant were American Smelting. Philip Morris and Ches apeake & Ohio. Chrysler, up around 2 at one i time, fell back from its best, i Newmont Mining rose a bit in the curb as did Mead Johnson, ! Nehi Corp. and Sherwin Williams. ; United States Treasury issues j were higher in the bond market j but most of the corporate list dipped. Commodities w'ere mixed.
