Wholesaler's Big-Scale Charity Is in a Christmas Rush Charity for man and beast is the everyday concern of Bernard Har ding, but he's busiest about his good works at Christmastime. Candy for men in jail, shoes for ragged waifs, turkeys for the strug gling heads of households, salmon and liver for stray cats, fresh beef for homeless dogs—these things engage as much of Mr. Harding’s attention as the wholesale business he conducts at 309 Seventh street N.W. Just now Mr. Harding is enlist ing his friends and associates in a private scheme to buy coal for the stoves of the coldest homes In the city. One of his friends, a leading coal dealer, will let him have the fuel at cost and his banker has agreed to handle the purchasing fund. “I'll start the ball rolling with 5 or 10 ton6,'' he said, “and my friends are going to help me. You see, 1 know what it is to be cold. I was born in Georgetown 69 years ago, of a poor family. We were always moving. My father, a fish | erman, had a tough time providing for us. ‘‘Now that I’m getting along in life and my son is helping me with the business I have more time to give to my friends less fortunate than I am.” Mr. Harding was in terrupted by the arrival of a black mongrel which scratched at the door of his candy and cigar whole sale place. ‘‘That fellow is always on time,” grinned Mr. Harding. He took a plate of fresh beef out to the visitor. “Dogs can eat more beef than I can. I have about five making regular calls on me now and they get away with 10 pounds a day. “Mostly I have to go to the cats, They’re in buildings around here Maybe I’ve spoiled them. They won’t eat anything but salmon, liver and fresh beef. I give them fresh water twice a day in the winter and three times a day in hot weather.” On Thanksgiving and Christmas Mr. Harding sends as much as IOC pounds of candy to the men in the District Jail. For 20 years he's been giving shoes to poor children through the Central Union Mission and the Sal vation Army. This year he pro vided about 100 pairs of shoes and stockings. Navy Awards Contract The Navy yesterday awarded a $22,880 contract to F. H. Martell Co., Washington, for the extension of Building 177 at the Navy Yard here. Gifts to Be Distributed To Needy Today Eight gift-laden automobiles were to leave the offices of the Children’s Protective Association, 1907 S street N.W., at 2 o’clock this afternoon to deposit presents at the homes of children for whom the Community Chest agency has been responsible. The cavalcade was to be under the direction of Mrs. Peyton Hawes Dunn and Mrs. Walter A. Bloedorn, board members of the organization, assisted by a committee composed of Miss Jeannette Morrell, Verhard Bond, Miss Gloria Rich, Mrs. Elea nor Monahan, Miss Margaret Par sons, Mrs. Ida Bell Draper and Miss Lucille Walton. The gifts, which were assigned with a view to the probable likes of the recipients, were to be “smug gled" into the homes or, in some cases, left at neighbors’ houses to avoid detection by the youngsters.
