Added Fire Hazard Seen in Reduction Of Fire Force Randle Highlands Citizens Hear Wender on Suffrage Opposition to any reduction in the personnel of the District Fire De partment was voted by the Randle Highlands Citizens’ Association last night after it was charged that such a reduction would increase the fire hazard and work a hardship on other firemen. The resolution was adopted unanimously. A motion presented by Arthur B. Hanson, chairman of the Laws and Legislation Committee, opposing any increase in the District gasoline tax was passed. ( Wender Speaks on Suffrage. Harry S. Wender. vice president of the Federation of Citizens’ Asso ciations. spoke on suffrage, opposing the “accidental form of government that has grown up over a period of years in the District of Columbia. He stated the District of Columbia Suffrage Association would not ac cept any form of reorganization in the District government that does not include local suffrage. “Local and national representation are wanted by people of the Dis trict. Americans,” Mr. Wender said, “and we are going to fight until we get both. There is no reason why we cannot live and vote as other people all over the United States do. Treatment of residents of the District is un-American.” T. Z. Carroll reported on the last meeting of the federation Coasting Danger Cited. Lt. J. L. Norris of No. 11 police precinct spoke on the danger of chil dren coasting in the streets and the necessity of policemen to watch and guard them. He said at least three men should be at each street where sledding takes up two blocks or more, and this means these police men are called away from their regular duties and would not be able to police the city properly. He sug- , gested that government-owned property or private property jhould ! be supplied for the sledders. Adle bert W. Lee, association president, stated he would appoint a committee to confer with Lt. Norris to work out a solution. The sum of $5 was voted to help defray expenses of the dedication of ; the John Philip Sousa Bridge. New members taken into the asso- ! eiation were T. A. Curran. Charles Milburn, H. C. Hopkins, H. R. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Seaman. An entertainment and refresh ments concluded the meeting, which was held in the Orr School. A. F.G. E. Head Urges Funds for Promotions James B. Burns, president of the American Federation of Govern ment Employes, appealed to the House Appropriations Committee yesterday to adopt the Budget Bu reau's recommendation that $3,000, 000 be provided for increased pro motions in the Government service. In a letter to members of the com mittee asking that hearings be held on the subject Mr. Burns declared that for almost a decade promotions “have been few and irregular.” “We deeply appreciate the atti tude of many of the members of your committee in favor of segre gation of the unused personnel bal ances for promotion purposes, but realize that a complete establish ment of uniformity cannot be at tained without additional funds.” his letter said. "* * * Nothing will more greatly improve the merit system at this time than this recog- j nition of faithful service on the part of thousands of Government servants who have been laboring in ; season and out to establish the best public service in the world.” Junior Red Cross Meeting Election of officers and review of Its Christmas work were on the j agenda of the Junior Red Cross Council of the District of Columbia Chapter at a meeting scheduled this morning.
