AR RAGES beyond both of the oceans bordering the United States. America hopes, but can not be certain, that the fighting will remain thousands of miles distant. Should Mars threaten, however, whether from the direc tion of the rising sun or the setting sun, experts are confident that our Navy could protect our shores—protect them if the Navy chanced to be in the right ocean. With the Panama Canal open to passage of the fleet, there never could be any doubt that it would be where it might be needed when it might be needed. BUT THE CANAL MUST BE KEPT OPEN. The important question is whether it can be made im pregnable. [ More has been told in innumerable anecdotes. Yet a great deal has been left unwritten and unsaid up to the present. Carl Sandburg in his four-volume biography of Lincoln has gone into an exhaustive exploration not only of Lincoln but of the days in which he lived. It is a monumental work, filled with infinite detail. In the Editorial Section of Sunday’s Star you will find a comprehensive article by Thomas R. Henry in which the biography is reviewed.
