Face Foliage Is Popular These Days Bearded Players In Demand in Many Filing It the Auoclatcd Press. HOLLYWOOD. These are good times for Holly wood's “beards”-7the boys who make a living in films where abundant facial foliage is in demand. "Gone With the Wind” gave many of them work. "Virginia City” used others. So did "Northwest Passage” and "Destry Rides Again.” Now, with “The Sea Hawk” being cast, lush days continue. There’s quite a colony of luxu riantly adorned young men who' boycott the razor blade manufac turers for picture purposes. No one ever took a census, but 50 or more are always on hand a few hours after the first call goes out. Depending upon their beauty and suitability, the beards earn $8.25, $11 or $16.50 per day for their owners. Many stunt men wear them, icoming the synthetic variety. For, as one of them put it: "There's plenty for two hands to do when you’re staging a tough stunt. Imagine having to press a false beard back into place while you're tumbling downhill.” Keavy (Continued From First Page.) screen test without the fuss and expense of a trip to Hollywood. “The word has finally got around that it’s tough to get into the movies,”- says Tom Pettey, armchair investigator for the Will Hays or ganization. Such complaints always get to Pettey’s desk, there being no other vigilance department here for such matters. “The thing that did the most damage to the talent scout racket is spread of the knowledge that to work in pictures one has to get into a union,” says Pettey. “And the unions are anything but easy to join. “Newspapers contributed, too, to the demise of a vicious enterprise. Unless they were certain a scout represented a studio, the papers began to wire or write this office. I could find out in a minute whether the fellow named in the query was real or otherwise. “But I haven’t had much finding out to do lately.” Pettey had to look in his files to determine how long since he's been asked to answer one like this: “Joe Dokus, who says he is talent scout lor studio, offers to take movie test for $15 to cover cost of film. In dicates he might be working for Warner’s or Universal. How about him?" He used to answer telegrams like this every few days, but it’s been six months since Pettey reported Dokus wasn't Okus. Hollywood Does Us Bit With Gas Mask Mascara. Ominous note in the make-up world: Par from the war scene, experts here have started to work on a waterproof eyelash make-up. The British ministry of home security warned women that the temperature Inside gas masks might cause mas cara to run, leading to smarting, tears and spasms of the eyelids. •‘This in turn would produce an urgent desire to remove the mask,” said the ministry, “with dangerous results if gas were present.” Yes, Indeed. Cosmetician Max Factor, jr., is not one to let gas mask wearers go un mascaraed. He hopes to make the stuff insensitive to heat and tears. Miss Bondi Can’t Escape the Elephants. There are actors who believe their own publicity and folks who believe the story that Beulah Bondi is an elephant fancier. ‘‘Look, another,” she said the other day, just after some one walked into ‘‘Our Town”—the film she’s in now— with a tiny pink pachyderm for her collection. It started 10 years ago in Denver, when this one-line item ap peared: “Beulah Bondi’s hobby is elephants.” THEATER PARKING 6 P.M. TO Pfc Pf_ 12 P.M. Miriam used to close her sets to visitors and press, but like Kay Francis she is no longer star No. 1 of her pictures and must follow the lead of the lead. The present prevailing mood of non-temperament is due to the ex ample set by the big screen shots of today. It has been proved con clusively that you can be a good actress without being tempera mental, that you can exhibit "grace under pressure”—and still bring them to the box office. Vivien Leigh has a reputation for being difficult to handle. I suspect this is a publicity gag to coincide with her portrayal of the difficult Miss Scarlett O’Hara. In the dozens of times I have watched her on the set I have never yet seen the slight est sign of temperament. Among the movie veterans, Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford are the nicest to talk to, work with and watch. I’ve never yet seen Norma lose her temper on the set. For the first time in her movie career, Ginger Rogers is working on a closed set. But this does not indi cate new-found sensitivity on Ginger’s part. At least I hope not. There are several reasons given for' Ginger’s new attitude. One, that she does not want to publicize the new color and style on her hair. Two. that the picture (“Primrose Path”) is extremely emotional, and the director wants to keep Ginger in NATIONAL SYMPHONY HANS KINDLER, Conductor Today at 4 P. M. If Ginger's next picture has a “closed” sign on the door it will be a little harder to explain. But I think it will be open. Ginger is essentially an easy-to-get on-with girl. Actresses like Rosalind Russell, Bette Davis, Nancy Kelly, Myma Loy, Hedy Lamarr, Alice Faye, Fay Bainter, Joan Blondell, May Robson and Irene Dunne are so quiet in their actions I sometimes wonder how on earth their studios are able to think up schemes to publicize them. “Oomph” girl, Ann Sheridan, has changed not the slightest since re ceiving her prefix.
