NEW YORK, March 5.—The bond
market made a stab at recovery to
day under leadership of United
States Governments, medium-priced
rails and a selected group of foreign
dollar obligations. Transactions
toward noon were light.
Overnight reports that the Treas
ury would confine its March quar
terly financing to refunding and skip
the raising of any new' money
brought gains up to 15-32 point in
the Treasury loans.
Firm spots elsewhere included
Union Stockyards 4’4s, Missouri
Illinois 5s, Studebaker 6s, Interboro
Rapid Transit 5s. Burlington 5s.
Missouri Pacific 5s, Montana Power
34s and Western Union 5s.
Foreign loans improving as much
Bs a point or more included Norway
6s. Australia 44s, Belgium 64s,
Queensland 6s and Uruguay 334s.
Hanging back for minor losses
were scattered trading favorites, in
cluding Portland General Electric
4 4s, Santa Fe 4s and International
Hydro Electric 6s.
American Cities Power
Calls Class A Stock

RICHMOND. Va., March 5.—
Stockholders of the American
Cities Power & Light Co. voted to
retire two issues of class A stock
and re-elected the Board of Direc
tors at the annual meeting here
today.
A company spokesman said the
routine matters listed in the notice
of the meeting were agreed upon
speedily.
Gold Imports Reach
New High in Year

NEW YORK. March 5.—Gold im
ports set a new high record in 1939
Of $3,574,000,000, the New York Fed
eral Reserve Bank stated in its an
nual report.
Although some of the metal was
placed under earmark for foreign
account with the Federal Reserve
Bank of New York, the monetary
gold stock of the United States in
creased $3,132,000,000 during the
year. The increase was larger than
the total dollar value of the gold
stock held in this country in any
year prior to 1921.
The inflow' was greatest during
the first eight months of the year.
Before the end of June imports had
exceeded the 1938 record of close to
$2,000,000,000.

ings totaled 182.979, against 203,548
in January, 155.772 for February,
1939, and 259.437 for February. 1930.
Loadings for the week ended
March 2 totaled 45,073, against 42.572
in the previous week, 40.736 in the
corresponding week a year ago and
63.623 in the corresponding 1930
week.

foreign exchange dealings today, compared

Wholesale Commodity
Index Again Lower
The wholesale commodity price
index compiled by the National
Fertilizer Association declined last
week to the lowest point reached
since the first week of October.
This index in the week ended March
2 was 77.1 compared with 77.4 in
the preceding week. 77.5 a month
ago, 72.8 a year ago and 768 two
years ago. based on the 1926-1928
average as 100.
Lower prices for farm products
and foods largely accounted for the
decline: the average for all other
commodities remained unchanged
for the week. The food price aver
age is now lower than at any time
since the sharp rise began early
last September.
The broad nature of last week's
decline in foodstuff prices is indi
cated by the fact that 13 price
series included in the group aver
age declined while only three ad
vanced.
Lower prices for grains, eggs and
wool were responsible for the drop
in the farm product index. The
12th consecutive decline was reg
istered by the textile price aver
age, with last week's declines in
textiles being in cotton goods and
yarns, hemp, wool and burlap. A
slight recession in gasoline quota
tions lowered the fuel index.
The other group index to move
lower last week was that repre
senting the prices of miscellaneous
commodities, reflecting downturns
in rubber, calfskins and cattle feed.
The metal price average rose for
the third successive week as the
result of higher quotations for non
ferrous metals. A small increase
took place in the building material
Index.
Illinois Central Shelves
R. F. C. Loan Request

The Illinois Central Railroad Co.
today withdrew from the Interstate
Commerce Commission a request for
authority to barrow $5,000,000 from
the Reconstruction Finance Corp.
The I. c. C. Bureau of Finance
advised the Illinois Central several
months ago that it did not consider
the collateral proposed to be suffi
cient. The bureau suggested the
railroad might want to withdraw
the application rather than have
the commission issue an unfavorable
report.
The Illinois Central sought the
loan for repairs on locomotives and
freight cars.
Paperboard Output
Ahead of Year Ago

Manufacturers of paperboard re
ported to the Commerce Depart
ment that January production was
430,895 tons, or 72.1 per cent of
rated capacity. This was a decline
of less than 1 per cent from the
December rate and an increase of
11.1 per cent over January, 1939.

Loft Will Transfer
Pepsi-Cola Control
To New Concern

NEW YORK. March 5.-Stock
holders of Loft, Inc., will receive
shares in a new concern, the Loft
Candy Corp., under a plan to sepa
rate the Loft holdings in Pepsi-Cola
Co., recent earner of large profit*
from a beverage of that name.
Loft, Inc., for many years has
operated a chain store candy and
ice cream business in the East, but
the rapid increase in Pepsi-Cola
earnings came to overshadow the
others.
Loft holds 205,437 out of the 259.
277 shares of capital stock of the
Pepsi-Cola Co.
In carrying out the plan for sepa-'
ration of the candy business from
the Pepsi-Cola holdings, the direc
tors announced a distribution of one
share of Loft Candy Corp., the new
unit, for each outstanding share of
Loft. Inc., payable April 2 to holders
of record March 15.
Stores Are Transferred.
Of the 173 stores in the Loft chain,
it - was explained. 153 have been
transferred to the candy unit. It
was expected the remaining stores
would be closed or shifted eventu
ally to the candy concern.
Also transferred under a 10-year
lease was the Loft manufacturing
plant at Long Island City, N. Y.
The arrangement, it w'as said,
would effect savings in rents and
other charges.
The management indicated it
aimed at a long-range program of
rehabilitation for the chain system.
Excluding dividends received last
year from Pepsi-Cola stock. Loft,
Inc., and subsidiaries reported con
solidated net loss of $1,487,599 com
pared with net loss of $946,151 in
1938.
The dividends from Pepsi-Cola
amounted to $3,081,555. of which
$1,531,820 was credited to the Loft
investment in the beverage com
pany under the segregation plan
and $1,549,734 assigned to the in
come account of Loft.
$12,135 Net Reported.
With the Pepsi-Cola income. Loft,
Inc., showed consolidated net profit
of $12,135. equal to less than a cent
a share on the capital stock.
Much litigation resulted from
Loft's efforts to establish ownership
of Pepsi-Cola shares, some remain
ing to be settled.

Foreign Markets
LONDON. March 5 </P).—The stock mar
ket seemed to give full approval to the
announcement of a new war loan issue
today. The old war loan 3Vas was in
strong demand, quoted at £100 In inter
office dealings after the official close, a gain
of around £’? Kaffirs also started to puli
ahead but the balance of the list tended
lower as support switched elsewhere Most
industrial leaders were marked down,
along with domestic rails. Coppers held
their own.
PARIS.—The British-Italian quarrel
over coal shipments dampened buying
spirits in slow bourse trade today. Pho
hibitlon of sale of liquor and aperitifs
three days a week affected shares of com
panies concerned. Rentes closed 5 cen
times lower to 85 higher.
AMSTiflRDAM -w-While most American
shares improved their position in the
bowse today, domestic stocks lost an out
side of 2 points. Steels and coppers were
favored in the foreign list.
