Notes From the Social Calendar of Washington and Its.Environs Woodrings to Be Guests Sunday of Mrs. Atwill At Country Home Mrs. George W. Norris Entertains in Honor of Mrs. Edward R. Burke And Mrs. Hyde Sweet The Secretary of War and Mrs. Harry H. Woodring will be guests over Sunday of Mrs. Lionel Atwill at her country home in the Green Spring Valley near Baltimore. Mrs. Atwill will give a dinner party tomorrow evening for her guests and take them later to the Hunt Ball at the Alcazar in Baltimore. Mrs. Harold L. Ickes, wife of the Secretary of the Interior, will enter tain at dinner tonight in honor of Miss Bhico Batlivala, Indian barrister and lecturer. Miss Batlivala has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hogue while here. She has been in this country for several months and will sail within a few weeks to return to her home. The Polish Ambassador, Count Jerzy Potocki, returned yesterday from a short stay in New York. The Ambassador will act as host this evening at the benefit recital which Mr. Artur Rubinstein, Polish pianist, will give for the aid of the Polish Relief Fund Mrs. Frank H. Simonds is chair man for the benefit and the Ambassador has loaned the embassy for the recital. The Chinese Ambassador, Dr. Hu-Shih, went to New York yesterday, accompanied by the Second Secretary of the embassy, Mr. Kien-wen Yu, for a brief stay. The Chilean Ambassador and Senora de Cabero were hosts at luncheon yesterday entertaining in honor of Senor Guillermo Labarca, former Minister of Interior and National Defense of Chile. Other guests were the Chilean Ambassador to Spain, Senor Manuel Bianchi; the direc tor General of the Pan American Union, Dr. Leo S. Rowe; the Chief of the Division of Cultural Relations of the State Department and Mrs. Ben Cherrington, the Chief of the International Communications and Mrs. Thomas Burke, Mr. and Mrs. Emilio Collado, Mr. Sanley Woodward of the State Department, Senora Concha Romero James of the Pan American Union, and the Counselor of the Chilean Embassy and Senora de Gazitua and the Commercial Counselor and Senora de Campbell. Senator Robert A. Taft is in New York where yesterday afternoon he was the guest of honor at a reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Daniel R. Hanna, jr.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. McCahill and Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Howard, all of Cleveland. The party was given at the Savoy-Plaza and among the other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ogden Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Howard; the presidnet of William and Mary College, Mr. John Stewart Bryan; Col. Robert R McCormick, Capt. Joseph Medill Patterson, Mr. William Allen White, Mr. Robert McLean and the former Assistant Sec retary of the Navy, Mr. David Scull Ingalls of Cleveland. Mrs. George W. Norris, wife of Senator Norris of Nebraska, enter tained at luncheon at the Congressional Club yesterday in honor of Mrs. Edward R. Burke, wife of Senator Burke, and Mrs. Hyde Sweet. Mrs. Sweet is the wife of the newly elected Reprsentative from Nebraska. Assisting Mrs. Norris in receiving the 21 guests were her two daugh ters. Mrs. John Robertson and Mrs. Gordon Rath. Among the guests were Mrs. Burke’s daughters, Mrs. Lewis Lind and Mrs. Louise Bean. Justice and Mrs. Justin Miller were hosts at an interesting tea yes-1 terday afternoon in their apartment at Wardman Park Hotel. Mrs. Alfred Knopf, wife of the New York publisher, was the guest of honor. Mrs. Knopf left town this morning after a brief stay in the Capital. The hostess wore a tea gown of black crepe, with long sleeves and a hlgl\ neckline edged in pastel sequins. Mrs. Knopf wore an all-black en semble and a spring hat of straw. Assisting the hostess at the tea table were Mrs. Robert H. Jackson. Mrs. D. Lawrence Groner, Mrs. Harold Stephens, Mrs. Fred Vinson, Mrs. Henry W. Edgerton. Mrs. Wiley Rutledge and Mrs. Donald Halstead. Those generally assisting were Mrs. Henry F. Grady and Mrs. Wesley Sturges.^ Gen. Edwin M. Watson, aide to President Roosevelt, is at the Wash ington Baths of Saratoga Spa, N. Y. He is stopping at the Gideon Putnam. Notables to Attend Segovia Society Reception Tonight The Ambassador of Panama and Senora de Boyd will be the ranking guests this evening at 8:30 o’clock at the musicale and reception given by the Segovia Society. The artists will be Senoritas Elena, Mildred and Edith Boyd, the triplet daughters of the Am bassador and Senora de 'Boyd, who W'ill sing South American and Spanish folk songs to the accompaniment of their own guitars, and Elena Crivella, con cert pianist. Other distinguished guests will be Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas, the Minister of Nica ragua and Mme. Leon de Bayle, the Minister of Honduras and Senora Julian R. Caceres, Mr. George Boncesco, financial coun selor of the Rumanian Legation, and Mme. Boncesco: Maj. Felipe Munilla, military attache of the Cuban Embassy, and Senora de Munilla, Senor Don Julio Vega Batlle, first secretary of the Do minican Legation, and Senora Maria Teresa de Vega, Senor Don Juan B. E. de Castillo Najera, and Miss Lola de Boyd. Californians End Brief Stay Here Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Carlisle of San Francisco were in Wash ington for a brief stay and left yesterday for the West. Mrs. Car lisle, who formerly was Miss Mary Gorgas, daughter of the late Lt. Comdr. Miles Carpenter Gorgas. U. S. N., and Mrs. Gorgas, motored from New York to Washington, where Mr. Carlisle joined her yes terday, making the trip by plane. JOSIPH R. Gray, wife of the chancellor of the Ameri can University, is entertaining at tea this afternoon from 3 to 5 o'clock in honor of the new officers of the Ministers’ Wives Association. Higgins Becomes Bride Of Dr. Edward H. Griggs A wedding of interest here took place last evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Karig at Alex andria, when Mrs. Karig's aunt, Mrs. Alvin M. Higgins, widow of the New York attorney and author, was married to Dr. Edward Howard Griggs, internationally knowm edu cator and lecturer. Both Dr. Griggs and his bride are from Croton-on Hudson, N. Y. The ceremony was performed by ! Dr. Alexander C. Zabriskie of the ! Episcopal Theological Seminary fac ulty. Miss Keating Karig, grandniece I of Mrs. Griggs, was her attendant. After a supper and small recep tion Dr. and Mrs. Griggs left for a motor tour of the South. They will make their home at Orchard Hill, Croton-on-Hudson. Dr. Griggs was born in Minnesota and has been on the faculties of Indiana and Leland Stanford Uni versities. Alexander, Jr., and Mrs. E. L. Vanderbilt, who will arrive today from New York. Miss Louise Alexander, who joined her father recently after a visit on the Pacific Coast and at several large cities en route east, will go to New York the first of the week with her brother and Mrs. Vanderbilt. Mr. Alexander recently purchased the house at Easthampton, Long Island, former home of Mrs. Cody, and with his family will spend the summer there. Mrs. William W. McLeans’ baby yesterday after noon might easily be termed a triple celebration, since it was in addition to being a very special christening, the wedding anniversary of the young parents as well as the birthday anniversary of one of the godparents— Eddie Reeves, who came down from New York especially for the occasion. The paternal grandmother, Mrs. Edward B. McLean, wore a smart DiacK irocK witn a large brimmed black picture hat and the famous “Hope dia mond” and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Pyne, looked striking in a spring out fit of navy blue. In addition to Mr. Reeves, the godparents were "Jock's” brother and sister, Edward, jr„ and Evalyn McLean, the latter in a smart new print. The beau tiful blond mother of “the young man of the hour” wore a dashing print gown of green and brown and Mrs. Edward B. McLean, jr., was in plain navy blue. The large room at Friendship had one end completely banked with white flowers and an altar especially erected for the oc casion. After the simple and very beauti ful ceremony there were toasts in cham pagne—and a very general air of happiness and gayety. Among the people we saw at this party were the Secretary of War and Mrs. Harry Woodring, Winston and Henry Frost, up from the Virginia hunting country; the Mrs. John McLean.
