Roosevelt's Name May Be Only One More Convention Senator Harrison Urges Mississippi to Indorse Third Term •JUi-ibe Associated Press. Signs increased today that Presi dent Roosevelt's name might be the ttlly one presented to the Demo cratic National Convention for top place on tire 1940 ticket. Following the statement of Sena tor Harrison, Democrat, of Missis sippi, urging Mississippi Democrats to indorse the President for a third term, prominent party members ex pressed the opinion that his renom ination might come about without a tingle challenge. Friends of Speaker Bankhead, Democrat, of Alabama said the lat ter s name would not be proposed if it appeared that the President would accept another candidacy. Alabama will be the first State called when nominations are in or der. Although pledged to Mr, Bank head. associates of the House pre siding officer said the State prob ably would pass when the roll was begun. Course Is in Doubt. No one would predict definitely whether Vice President Garner and Postmaster General Farley would actually withdraw their candidacies before the convention meets. Rumors that Mr. Farley might di rect his pledged delegates from Mas sachusetts to support Mr. Roosevelt on the first ballot could not be con firmed here, although Representa tive McCormack, Democrat, of Mas sachusetts. a convention delegate, said that he had reserved the right to vote for the President "if he is a candidate or if he is drafted." Gamer managers here would not comment on Senator Harrison's statement. The Senator has been a close friend of Mr. Garner for years, and until yesterday he had not expressed himself on the third term question. He has differed with the White House at times on taxa tion and spending questions. Telegraphed Indorsement. Senator Harrison's indorsement was given in a telegram to Herbert Holmes, Mississippi Democratic chairman. He said that his tax bill duties would prevent him from at tending the State party convention next Tuesday, and he asked Mr Holmes to express to the meeting his hope that it would “unanimous ly indorse President Roosevelt for renomination." "The Nation is now confronted with grave international and do mestic programs," Senator Harrison 1 said. "In times of such great emer gency precedents can be broken; and because of his thorough grasp of the international situation, his masterful handling of our foreign affairs from the beginning of the present world crisis, and the accom plishments of his administration, I believe it imperative that the Presi dent be re-elected." Comments From Senators. Senator Minton. Democrat, of In diana. Democratic whip, said Sen ator Harrison's action "indicates that all shades of opinion in the Democratic party will be heartily behind the President for a third term." “It looks like a landslide," com mented Senator McKellar, Demo crat, of Tennessee. Senator Pepper, Democrat, of Florida said it meant that "liberals, conservatives and middle-of-the roaders are coming together for the j safety of our country." He suggested that, the Republicans nominate Mr. Roosevelt for President and that the Democrats pick a Republican for vice presidential candidate. Hudson told British farmers today ‘‘we are faced with a peril much greater than we faced in any period in the last war," and he asked them to produce the maximum yield from the land in the coming year. Speaking at the annual confer ence of the Council of Agriculture, Mr. Hudson warned: ‘‘We shall have to do things no one contemplated in the last war.” Hamilton Calls Upon President to Replace Some of Cabinet Republican Leader Also Urges Amendment of Several New Deal Laws By the Associf ted Press. WATERBURY, Conn., June 6.— John Hamilton, chairman of the Republican National Committee, last night called on President Roosevelt to replace some of his cabinet and seek amendment of some New Deal legislation in order to render the work of the National Tefense Commission more effective. “It is quite all right for the Presi dent to set up a board or group of men to make for efficiency in the carrying out of the rearmament program, but after all this board is not free from the laws of the United States, nor is it free from the ef fects of those laws upon both indus try and labor,” Mr. Hamilton said in an address before the Italian Republican League. Question for President. “Do you not think that you would gain a greater co-operation from industry as a whole if those men in your cabinet who, time after time, have attacked the business of this country were replaced by men in whom business and the public would have confidence?” was one of the questions he addressed to the President. He asked also: "Would it not, Mr. President, aid the very program which you advo cate if you were to request of the Congress amendments to the Se curities Exchange Act which would make it easier to obtain capital for the expansion of those industries which are to be called upon to man ufacture and produce much of the needed arms and munitions? Cites N. L. R. B. Inquiry. “Do you not believe that you should take notice of the hearings which were held in connection with the investigation of the National Labor Relations Board and move promptly by legislation or otherwise to see that the board is so consti tuted that it will be an agency, not for the advancement of the interests of any single labor group, but for all labor and for employers as well? "Inasmuch as your program looks toward the establishment of an air force second to none, would it not be well to revoke your recent order placing the Civil Aeronautics Au thority under a political agency and let it operate as it did in the past, for LATEST NEWS The Night Final Star, containing the latest news of the day during these dramatic times, is de livered every evening throughout the city and suburbs between 6 P.M. and 7 P.M.
