No Basis for Berle's Fears, Law Guild Head Says A "misapprehension" apparently prompted the resignation of As sistant Secretary of State A. A. Berle, jr„ from the National Law yers’ Guild and its District of Co | lumbia chapter, Judge Robert Ken ney of Los Angeles, Calif., recently elected president of the association, said yesterday when asked to com ment. "The guild is essentially a pro fessional. not a pressure, organiza tion." Judge Kenney declared, add ing he saw no reason why the or ganization. which he said had pro vided the legal profession with "a! progressive stimulus.” should be i condemned because of the actions of a "small minority." In his letters of resignation, made public yesterday. Mr. Berle had con tended the guild had refused "to take any stand which conflicts with the Communist party line.” Pointing out the alleged Com munist views “did not find any ex pression at the convention in New York last Saturday,'* Judge Kenney said he felt Mr. Berle perhaps had not been keeping in touch with activities of the guild’s dominant element. Remarking that many organiza tions are plagued with persons in terested in using them as “pres sure” groups, he expressed the view most of the recently resigned mem bers of the guild would return \fhen they realized their fears "had no basis in fact.” Brazil's orange trade is hard hit bv lack of demand from Britain and Scandinavia.
