Conchita, Toast of Gold Camps
In Wild West Era, Dead at 79

SOUTH COLBY, Wash., June 15.
—"Conchita, the California favor
ite” who once was the toast of
the gold camps, will be buried to
morrow beside her husband, J. Leo
Shaw, "the original man on the
flying trapeze.”

Shaw—died Thursday at the age
of 79 far from the footlighted fame
of her early-day vaudeville troup
ing career.
Once she played California gold
camps, the sophisticated salons of
19th century Boston and "packed
them in” at Leadville, Cripple Creek,
Cheyenne, Denver, Butte and Fair
banks, Alaska, when those mining
centers were at their wildest.
Her husband, as "Munis Leo,”
was a famous circus acrobat when
he met 16-year-old Conchita while
playing Madison Square Garden in
New York. They married and be
gan trouping together, climaxing
their career by being featured on
the same billing with T. W. Keene,
the great tragedian in San Fran
cisco in ’75.
Mrs. Shaw made her first stage
appearance as “Little Willie” in
"East Lynne,” when she was 8.
Later, as a member of the Child
Opera Company. New York City,
she toured the West Indies as a
singer and actress.
One of the Shaws’ favorite recol
lections was the time roadside ruf
fians halted their stagecoach on
the plains and ordered a "command
performance.” Conchita sang the
sentimental ballad. "Is Mother
Thinking of Her Boy?” The high
waymen, in a burst of apprecia

Roosevelt Signs Bill
Protecting Bald Eagle
America’s emblematic bird, the
bald eagle, threatened with extinc
tion, is protected from hunters and
collectors in a bill which has just
been approved by President Roose
velt.
In directing attention to the act,
Secretary of the Interior Ickes yes
terday pointed out that it prohibits
destruction of the bird throughout
the United States and all is posses
sions, with the exception of Alaska.
Persons taking, possessing or deal
ing in bald eagles without a Federal
permit will be liable to a minimum
penalty of $500 fine, sir months’ im
; prisonment or both.
Secretary Ickes, however, is auth
! orized to issue permits to repre
; sentatives of museums, scientific so
j cieties or zoological parks.
The bald eagle was adopted as the
national symbol by the Continental
Congress of 1782.
The Bald Eagle Act of 1940 was
sponsored by two Massachusetts
members, Senator Walsh and Repre
! sentative Clason.

Pvt. Blackwell, who lived at 3017
Central avenue S.E., had been a
policeman and a resident of Wash
ington since 1924. A native of
Magee, Miss., he served in the Navy
from 1919 until 1923. During his
years on the force, Pvt. Blackwell
was commended four times for brav
ery. He had been in ill health more
than a year.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Dor
othy Portch Blackwell, and two sons,
Otho, jr., 13, and John Andrew, 11.
