But at tourney's end we’ll always lot Only God can , Way-Paying Recruits Spend Most of First Day Sitting Down Hard Drill Is Forecast For Fort Meade BPs Beginning Monday By the Associated Press. FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md., July 6.—Those business and profes sional men turned soldiers for a month did most of their training sitting down at this Army post today—and many of them wished more of it was standing up, for an Army transport truck is no plush seat. By Monday night, they’ll probably wish more of it was sitting down, for it's going to be a long day then of drill and more drill, entrucking and detrucking, and calisthenics and what-not—pretty hard on ten derfeet. Many of the 235 trainees from Maryland. Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, who planked down $43.50 for a month's keep to learn about the Army, were up like schoolboys before the first call of reveille at 5:45 a.m. today. The Regular Army men only winked about that. Take Oath of Allegiance. By 6 a m. they briskly gathered for first assembly and by 6:30 am., long before most of them normally awaken, they had had breakfast. They took the oath of allegiance, in ranks for the first time, and loaded into trucks for a ride to the camp theater where Maj. Percy Black of the field artillery lectured them on the Nazi blitzkrieg in Poland. After that they took it easy until lunch and turned out for softball, where most of them huffed and puffed after running out a single (when they managed to bat one out of the infield). Some of them, less sure of their feet, chose volley ball for loosening up. Gordon C. Whiting. Baltimore W'riter, observed that "the boys are taking it seriously and are bound to get their $43.50 worth. So far we’ve enjoyed it.” Recruits Tabbed "BPs.” The Regular Army men tabbed the recruits "BPs” (business and professional), and a 39-year-old Pennsylvania lawyer, name un known, disclosed with pride that a regular sergeant had said, “The BPs drill better than we do al ready.” Another regular wiped off the grin as he added. “The first day is always the easiest.” Joe West. Philadelphia real estate broker, entertained no false ideas, saying: ‘‘It would be a lot better if they could air-condition the drill field and put a little more padding in the seats of the transport trucks.” Opening at Plattsburg Strikes Somber Note PLATTSBURG, N. Y., July 6 — Gov. Herbert H. Lehman somberly launched a 30-day military training period for 3.000 boys and business men today with a prediction that defeat of England will bring armed invaders to American shores. Speaking at the birthplace of | "the Plattsburg idea*-” under which businessmen first volunteered a f quarter century ago for training in i behalf of preparedness, Gov. Leh man appealed for compulsory serv ice as the “only way” to obtain sufficient fighting men. More than 2,000 C. M. T.
