Carrier Loans Gain Most Attention on Bond Market Advances Range to Five Points; Other Groups Remain Narrow f By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 6—Rail loans were odds-on favorites in a steady bond market today. Gains for the carriers ranged to an outside 5 points for some nor mally inactive issues. Other corporates dawdled without getting very far either way. Demand for rails seemed directly inspired by latest carloadings re ports, which showed the Nation’s roads carried more freight than at any time since mid-November. On top of that, observers said, some speculative-minded buyers looked for the national defense pro gram to call for still larger freight movement when orders start rolling. Among the gainers were Illinois Central 4s4s at 39. N. Y., Lackawana <fc Western 44s at 55. Nickel Plate 5 4s at 635s, Missouri-Kansas-Texas 5s of ’62 at 1334 and Baltimore & Ohio stamped convertibles at 12 4. In the foreign division Japan 5 4s, one of the liveliest issues, rose 1% to 70. Buenos Aires 4%s lost % at 45%. Italy 7s added % at 45. A scattering of U. S. Governments gold at losses ranging to 5-32ds point. Turnover of $1,772,000, face value, compared with $1,556,000 last week, which was the smallest in nearly a year. Baltimore Markets •racial Dispatch to The Star. As incentive for further expan sion of shipbuilding yards, approxi mately $500,000,000 in additional United States Navy contracts were placed, increasing the already large backlog of future work in that re juvenated and booming industry. A sample of what might be forth coming in way of new plant and equipment expenditures when the defense outlay gets up speed was found in the announcement Pack ard Motors would spend $30,000,000 to get into production of airplane motors. Uncle Sam's procurement men continued to place hefty orders for cotton goods and other textiles to clothe and house the growing mili tary forces. Cotton dealers espe cially were grateful, because the big continental market under Nazi control has been closed to export of the South's chief farm product. Clinging to climbing factory pay rolls, June figures on retail trade revealed striking improvement. The Federal Reserve Board reported de partment store sales for four weeks ended June 29 were 10 per cent ahead of June, 1939, figures. Rec ord-breaking June sales were re ported by the big Sears Roebuck mail-order house, with an increase | of 11.5 per cent over the 1939 month.
