• _ Can’t Wait Shakes Off Place Jinx to Take Rich Butler Handicap at Empire/ - A.. .. .— - - - _. Favored Eight Thirty Finishes Third to Selznick Horse War Dog Takes Second Money; Winner Close To Track Record By the Associated Press. YONKERS. N. Y., July 6.—Myron Selznick’s hard luck horse Can’t r Wait, a 5-year-old that has been " second in numerous big stakes this year, broke loose the jinx and won the sixth Butler Handicap before a crowd of 21,460 here this ideal afternoon. With the talented Basil James in the saddle, the son of Victorian took the $21,000 major share of the purse by a length and a half, run ning the 11-16 miles in 1:57 3-5. only one-fifth of a second slower than Lovely Night’s track record. The victor paid $11.90. No Excuse for Eight Thirty. H. F. Guggenheim’s War Dog sur prised by heading G. D. Widener’s Eight Thirty, top-weighted favorite of the field and chief claimant to the championship of the handicap divi ■ sion, for the place. Eight Thirty had no apparent excuse. Isolator, which beat Can’t Wait and Eight Thirty in the Brooklyn , Handicap, could only rally enough - to finish fourth in the field of nine. Eight Thirty, carrying 128 pounds to the winner’s 111, was beaten, but not disgraced. He closed at 6 to 5. It was Can’t Wait’s second 1940 triumph in 10 attempts. Although the attendance was nearly 10.000 below that of July 4. it was likely that the mutuels handle would approximate the $1,024,661 wagered on the holiday card. Can't Wait Is Pressed. The Chief and War Dog raced like a team while dueling for the leader ship until the field rounded out of the backstretch. James, who had kept Can’t Wait about two lengths behind the pacemakers, made his move on that final bend. Can’t Wait spurted and shot to the front as they swung for home. The Selznick veteran opened up several lengths’ advantage after straightening in the stretch, but he had to be hard ridden when War Dog gamely came again and Eight Thirty rallied. The latter, sixth in the early running, bounded into third place nearing the final turn. He made up at least four lengths in the last furlong, but could not con cede the weight and win. Isolator, after racing wide all the way, trailed ' Eight Thirty by two lengths. Empire City Results By the Associated Press.'
