Good Taste of Directors Earns Them Freedom (Continued From First Page.) and discrimination, John Ford could not have made anything like so faithful a transfer of “Grapes of Wrath” to the screen. Not only was its basic material contrary to the canons theretofore prevailing, but many of its reproduced details were outlandishly alien to earlier conceptions of screen story telling Lubitsch, always famous for the Lubitsch touch, of course, gave his most recent illustration of its meaning to sophisticated material in “Ninotchka.” That, there has been any change in the basic production code of the Industry as administered by the Hays office, which would account for this liberalizing of screen fare, is vigorously denied. The existing code, on the contrary, merely has been adapted to changed times and broader public ideologies. The more liberal attitude simply has resulted in the acceptance of more and different types of stories, of which the above (graced with the most skilled direction) are specimens. Those responsible for their ac ceptance are the sturdiest proponents of a continued good taste which will result in further liberation of the screen. They have made a very good case to date. Hedy Lamarr Plays Heroine Role In Week’s Most-Inspired Writing. Says a note from M-G-M: “Miss Lamarr plays a siren (in “Boom Town”), completely giving Up her heroine roles of the past for this part.” Her heroine roles, impliedly sweet, including those of "Ecstasy," "Algiers,” “Lady of the Tropics,” and “I Take This Woman.” They can't kid us. Not if we know a heroine when we see one. At Last Here’s a Fight Film In Which the Hero Loses Jimmy Cagney Takes the Count In His Championship Bout In ‘City for Conquest’ By Robert Myers, Assoeiitrd Press stiff Writer. .. , , HOLLYWOOD. At last comes a movie where the pugilist hero gets licked. Many a Hollywood camera has ground out the sterling tale of a last round, last-pwoch triumph by the masculine Adonis with the marcelled hair-do—a terrific, almost unbelievable comeback by the hero. Now there will be a reversal Jimmy Cagney takes a beating. He loses his most Important fight, the one for „he “welterweight championship or me worm. in cuiy ror con quest,” As Mushy Callahan, the ex fighter, put it: “It's about time that Cagney got It after the way he's been punching guys around, shootin’ down little children and pushing grapefruits in ladies’ kissers.” FiTht fans will remember Mushy bs the onetime holder of the junior welterweight title, a crown since abandoned. Callahan is the tech nical director for the Cagney-Ann Sheridan opus. Most dolorous assistant on the set, however, is Harvey Parry. One of the best stunt men in pictures, and a former amateur boxer in the old days of the famed Olympic Club at San Francisco, where many a fighter got his start. Parry sneaked out the other day to make a little extra change by ramming an auto through a tfriek wall. The result, a broken nose. Cagney Really Trained. "Three times in other Cagney pic tures it s been me that had to get licked. Three times it's been me who was the champion that Cagney knocked out. Now comes this one, and I'm all set to hand him a beat ing, and I come up with a broken nose and can’t act. Ain’t that tough?” Demanded Parry laughing. From all reliable accounts, the doughty Cagney really went into serious training for the fight sequences. He spent two months at Catalina Island with Parry, follow ing a strict conditioning program. “What the heck,” Cagney ex claimed, "it wasn't fun, but a guy mv age can't be expected to throw »-- - punches for all the scenes we have to shoot unless he's in some kind of shape, so I had to get into con j dition, and do it the hard way.” As a matter of fact, Cagney looked trim, is built along the lines of a fighter, and proved to a jury of rather skeptical observers that he does know how to handle himself in the ring. Rules Don't Count. One of the best "takes” was ruined, though, when his opponent, a real preliminary fighter, let one fly that landed on the chin and shook him from head to heels. "But just as soon as it landed.” Cagney said, “he pulled up and apologized. It ruined the ‘shot.’ So what happened? We had to do it over again, and he had to hit me again because the first one looked so good the director wanted another just like it.” In between takes Callahan. Parry and others rehearse movements for the next shot. Callahan will say, “now look, give Jimmy a little ‘treat ment' like this,” and then he pro ceeds to rub the inside of the glove, with its laces up and down Cagney's face. "Hey, that's against the rules,” Cagney yells. "Yea, I know it, but we ain't goin’ by the rules.” Mushy bawls back. "We ain't goin' by the rules, we’re goin’ by the script.” Cagney grins back and concludes, "maybe I’d better quit fighting for Warner Brothers and box for Charlie MacDonald at the Hollywood Sta dium.” She’s Heard That One Author of ‘Thesaurus of Humor' Still Likes Jokes, However By the Associated Press. HOLLYWOOD. Mildred Meiers has heard this one. She's heard them all. And— She's written a book about them. Yet she still likes jokes. "But my perverted sense of humor gets me Into trouble,” says the eparkling, blue-eyed red-head who is a secretary in Joe Pasternak's office on the Universal lot. "Especially with men. Men want to be taken seriously end I’m always laughing at tnem. • Miss Meiers, assisted by Jack Knapp, is author of "Thesaurus of Humor,’’ a compilation of basic jokes and gags with many of their variations. It's a best-seller among books of its type and there’s an unusual success story behind it. Miss Meiers, from Toledo, Iowa, worked briefly as a movie extra and as secretary in local law offices before becoming assistant to J. P. Medbury, the comedy w’riter who was then producing a series of gag travelogues. They’d run conventional travel shots, then think of gags to apply in commentary. After a while, Miss Meiers began compiling a gag library. Then she sold copies of her library for $500 apiece—find ing a good market among screen and radio scribes. Again a secretary, she started her thesaurus, using her library' as a basis. Collecting the material re quired three years, arranging it took seven months of night-and-day Work. Then she submitted it to pub ;• Ushers, 25 of them. All rejected it, though in a complimentary way. So she published it herself, in bound, mimeographed form. She sold 75 copies of this at $10 a throw and then went to New York to see the publishers in person. The first one she showed it to—one who had not rejected it before—bought it. “I’ve already collected 4,000 items toward a new1 book—if I ever get up the nerve to tackle another. Oh, yes, I can still laugh, which. I sup pose, makes me nuts. But if a joke is funny at all, it's always funny if it's appropriate to the occasion, even if you've heard it before.’’ The most common basic joke, Miss Meiers thinks, is the one beginning, "Who was that lady I seen you with last night?” “A good gag writer,” she says, "is one with the ability to put a new swutch on an old gag. Every Joke has to have a serious foundation approached from a screwy angle.” Heffernan (Continued From First Page.) First Baby.” Then her mother took on an agent. Got Nowhere Fast. For a while things looked pretty bright. Joan was taken to see Mary Pickford. At the time, Mary was Intending to produce a picture and. smitten by little Joan's beauty and ability, signed her to play a role. Mary had clothes designed for the child and changed her name from Joan Felt to Joan Grayson. Mary even had the name she selected analysed by a numerologist to make eure it was a lucky one. But Mary severed connections with her producing company and Joan never got into a film under her contract. Next she was signed by B. P. Schulberg, and her name changed to Joan Field. But again the breaks were bad. Schulberg also went out of production. “We were beginning to feel pretty discouraged,” said Mrs. Felt. “But along came a small part in ‘One Mile From Heaven,’ with 20th Cen tury-Fox, and Joan finally got on the screen. Eight very small parts followed, but we were getting no where fast. “About this time I heard that Director Gregory La Cava was hunt ing for a little girl to play Ginger Rogers’ fresh little sister in 'Prim rose Path.’ I asked Joan's agent to «et her a test. He insisted she was not the type and didn’t have a chance. "But I had a different idea. It seemed to me her resemblance to Shirley Temple was proving a big handicap. We had been bleaching her hair to a pale gold to empha size the likeness. A complete change seemed necessary if we were to get any place at all. I decided to stake everything on this. If we couldn't, put it over, it was back home to Elizabeth with the battle lost. Three Years to Learn. "I first darkened Joan's* hair to its natural brown shade. I combed out the curls and pushed her hair straight back, dressing it in two tight braids. I put her in a cheap cotton dress that was a little too long and finished it off with cotton stockings and the plainest tan shoes I could find. "There were at least 150 little girls and their mothers there to answer the call. Many of them looked like Shirley Temple. But Joan didn’t, and I was glad. She was singled out of the whole group, tested and given the part. “It had taken me three years to Photoplays in Washington Theaters This Week WEEK OF JULY 7 i SUNDAY MONDAY | TUESDAY ArnHamu ; "Man From Dakota” "Man From Dakota” "Swls*-Famllv Rob ACaaemy I »nd -Millionaire and "Millionaire lnson" and "Valley 8th and O Sts. 8 E _ Playboy.';_Playboy.of the Olants.” Amhmviflnr I S*.T ,MiUV?d ,*nd gay'MUlantl and Ray Milland and AmDQS5Qaor Patricia Morlson Patricia Morlson Patricia Morlson 18th and Columbia Rd. _^_ln "Untamed.;__in_;Untamed in "Untamed." a_aiu W.ll.ee Beery Wallace Beery “ * Bint Crosby and Apollo in In Gloria Jean in 624 H St. N.E. My advice to mothers who intend bringing their daughters out here is first of all to make them as plain-looking as pos | sible.” Joan was born in Elizabeth, Jan uary 18, 1932. Her parents are non professionals, but Joan Early showed an aptitude for dancing and imi tations. Away from the studio, she plays with the neighborhood kids, rides a bicycle and likes to cook and help around the house. She has light brown hair and hazel eyes and weighs 64 pounds. This is 7 pounds over what he* normal weight should be and she is very proud of the fact that she is “diet ing” to reduce. As to her name (the fourth she has traveled under since coming to Hollywood) Joan selected it per sonally from a list picked from the Los Angeles telephone directory by her mother. Joan considers it “musical.” (Released by th» North American Newspaper Alliance. Inc.) ! Opening Tonight, 8 P. M. Filming was a quiet business when we groped into the stage at Para mount Studios the other day. De Mille’s set was practically empty— after the bravura of the first weeks when the big scenes were shot in the presence of a half-thousand spectators. The sole visitors were a dozen journalists, a class from a military academy in full uniform and a brace of celebrities. Almost TRANS-LUX AMERICA RESPONDS!. INDUSTRY MOBILIZES! . The set was about 20 feet square, with about 30 assistants jammed together at one end. De Mille, sitting on an attached chair, was snuggled up to a sky-blue technicolor camera as big as a trailer. It appeared to us the sim plest possible of scenes—Madeleine Carroll as the nurse, and brother to the hero, was to bandage up the foot of an Indian child in a wilder ness hospital. It was something, we think, that we could have filmed In 2 minutes. But the scene must have had its subleties. and was being re hearsed with stand-ins for Cooper and Miss Carroll, and a dummy for the child. The medical staff of the studio, a doctor and a nurse, stood by as advisers in the art of bandaging. Mr, De Milles Is Paternal. Director and camera poked about at the end of a boom that swung in arcs, searching for the proper dra matic angle. The great man mut tered dreamily into a microphone, his breathing magnified by loud speakers into a vast, disjointed oration. At the end of a half hour: “I shouldn’t be surprised if this would do. Yes, very well, indeed. The stand-ins will retire. After they had fallen back the scene was shot. De Mille's manner at this Juncture was softly encouraging, benign and paternal. A great scene had got itself done. The lights were struck, the assistants dragged away camera, wires and props. Another grouping was done, with the mutual congratulations still going on. This time. Miss Goddard as Louvette, the dark catamount traditional in all dramas like this, and Francis McDonald as Riel. De Mille is not the man to let any one down In the matter of types. He was playing in luck, we thought, because the Rebellion wasn’t back in the 70s, when the Mounted Police wore drab-green in stead of red—a tactical error on the part of the Government, because the Indians regarded nobody out of a red coat as a soldier. js B I B ■ ■ayV B ■i B id B !
