Soap Box Derby Boys Face Car Inspection Tomorrow Careful Inspection of the 1940 field of Soap Box Derby racers will begin tomorrow at the Randle Heights School, Thirtieth street and Pennsylvania avenue S.E., in preparation for Washington's third j coaster race for boys on Saturday. ! In accordance with letters of in struction mailed to the more than 200 Derby racers in the Washington Metropolitan Area, the coaster cars were to be turned in today to the 11 salesrooms of the Washington Chevrolet Dealers’ Association, where a preliminary checkup is to be made. The homemade speedsters then will be taken to the school, where the Inspection Committee will begin its work tomorrow. Inspection of the racers will be handled by a 29 man committee headed by John R. Weltzel, commander of Bunker Hill Post, American Legion. The inspection will determine if the boy-built cars are made accord ing to the 1940 rules, which require that each racer be constructed to certain dimensions at a cost of no more than $10. Any car showing evidence of adult construction will be barred from the race. On a special radio broadcast yes terday Derby Director Zeb T. Ham ilton listed some last-minute con struction items to be checked by the boy racers. The program was broadcast over Station WMAL. Meanwhile, Derby headquarters In The Star Building was busy pre paring to mail final instructions to each Derby entrant. Inclosed with the final Instructions will be two tickets for grandstand seats at the finish line on Pennsylvania avenue S.E. on Derby Day. The grandstand, which is to be erected near Carpenter street, will seat approximately 1,000 people. Lengths of snow fence will be erected paralleling the course to protect private lawns on the day of the race.
