National Income
To Be Analyzed in
Terms of Services
Commerce Division Seeks
To Find Production Totals
For Various Commodities
To provide an analysis of the com
position of income in terms of the
actual output of goods and services,
the Commerce Department will ex
pand its studies of national income,
Secretary Hopkins revealed today.
Prom its new studies, which have
been started with the co-operation of
William H. Shaw of the National j
Pureau of Economic Research, the
national income division will be able
to supply data measuring the amount
of food, clothing, household appli
ances and other goods produced in
pny year since 1929. Special atten
tion will be given to the output of
Items, such as machinery and new
factory buildings, which will even
tually add to the sum total of our
national wealth, and which may be
classified as capital formation.
In its new studies, the division will
lummarize the output of hundreds
of commodities, and these, in turn,
will be classified into 70 or 80 com
modity groups. To give a more com
plete picture of the composition of
our national income, the division will
also estimate consumers’ expendi
tures on services as well as com
codities.
In addition to providing back
ground data for national defense,
the new studies will have the fol
lowing principal uses: First, supple
ment the present national income
estimates by showing what goods
and services make up the national
Income; second, provide businessmen
with detailed information as to total
consumer expenditures for specified
groups of products, and third, cor
relate prices with dollar values so
aa to provide an estimate of the
physical volumes of commodities.
Shoots Atom Bullets
URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, 111., July
22 (<P).—An electric gun which
shoots a thousand million million
atomic bullets a second has been
set up at the University of Illinois.
It is called a linear accelerator. Its
bullets travel 3,000 miles a second,
but do not go far. They are used
to break up atoms in scientific in
vestigations. Makers of the gun
are Dr. John Manley, Dr. L. J.
Haworth and Emmet A. Luebke.
