Willkie Completes Utah Tour Gratified With Receptions Many Pledge Support; Turns to Writing Of Acceptance Address Mr the Associated l*ress. SALT LAKE CITS’. July 25.— Wendell L. Willkie wound up a series of Utah appearances today with a statement that he frankly had come here for votes and that he had en joyed seeking them. In response to a question, Mr. Willkie said that he liked to be with people. He saw thousands of them during his trip from his Colorado Springs, Colo, hotel to Cheyenne, Wyo.; Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. The Republican presidential nom inee arranged to return to Colorado Springs today and renew work there on his acceptance addre$$ to be delivered at Elwood, Ind, August 17. Attends Rodeo. Mr. Willkie, accompanied by Mrs. Willkie, drove last night to the Ogden rodeo. He received tumult ous cheers as he drove over the grounds before the performance started. “Both Mrs. Willkie and I,” the nominee said, "are grateful for the cordial, spontaneous and overwhelm ing welcome we have received in this Western country. "We realize—especially being here —how precious is the American way of life. I will do all I can, now and the rest of my life, to preserve the American way.” Mr. Willkie had said earlier and repeated later that he had wanted to come to Utah to see the Pioneer Day celebration in Salt Lake City and the rodeo in Ogden, but that he had another purpose—that of gathering votes. The candidate said he would “take a week off” next week to work privately on his acceptance address. He was expected to move to some mountain lodge near his Colorado Springs hetel. Mr. Willkie sat with Mrs. Will kie in an unshaded reviewing stand at Salt Lake City yesterday and ap plauded as a two-hour parade moved past .Those ,in his com pany were exhausted by the 95 degree heat, but Mr. Willkie told reporters he was feeling fine. He 6pent another hour shaking hands with a line of well-wishers in his hotel. Democracy Declared at Test. The nominee made a brief trip to the Salt Lake City rodeo and said in an address that “the Democratic way of life is in test throughout the world.” “Thoughtful people are disturbed,” he continued. “But, when we 're member that, in a similar period 93 years ago, your ancestors came to this area and made a civilization, I know we can believe that the American way of life is going to come through this time. It is going to come through in all its fineness and all its pleasantness." Before going to the rodeo Mr. and Mrs. Willkie visited Heber J. Grant, aged president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who Wished him success in his cam paign. As the visitors left the church of fices Mr. Grant smilingly told the nominee, “I’ll see that you’re elected.” At a press conference, the can didate said he was proud of the type of Democrats who were sup porting him and added that Presi dent Roosevelt, by attacking his Democratic supporters, “is climbing down Just slightly from his lofty pedestal.” Prefers to Be Natural. A questioner at the press confer ence asked if the nominee didn’t think he might be "too candid” in answering questions. "Well. Z don't know about that," was the smiling reply, "but I’m not going to be anybody but myself.” Here and at Cheyenne Mr. Willkle refused to give up his straw sailor for a "ten-gallon” headpiece, ex plaining: "I’d feel silly with that thing. X made up my mind when I went Into this thing that I’d oome out naturally . I don’t want to be af feotgd or evfu look affected.” SneH Will Re-Enter Polities to Aid Willkie POT8DAM, N. Y„ July 38 (&.— Bertrand H. Snell, former Republic* an House minority leader, an Bounced yesterday he would re enter politics to work for,the elec tion of Wendell L. Willkie, Repub lican presidential candidate. Mr. Snell, who retired as Repub lican Representative from Northern New York two years ago to resume private business, attended the Re publican National Convention in Philadelphia as a Wlllkie supporter. “The DemdfcraU,” Mr. Snell de clared, "are becoming alarmed over the deflection of national Demo cratic leaden who pull great weight to the Wlllkie camp. There is a widespread sentiment in Upstate New York for a man of proved business ability, who can direct the organization of national effort fuch as Willkie certainly is. “* * * Hie only issue in this campaign is whether or not we are going to remain a free people. If Mr. Roosevelt is strong enough at the end of two terms to force his nomination for a third, what power will he have at the end of that third term?” r%rS5!r^ IN YOtJB FOOT BATH. wdtVdR ulttr* mant bwac» F1NT SIZE 1IW For Health & Economy feed D & G "The Food of Champions" 3 V2C A DAY Keeps Your "Cocker" Healthy •n That Crunchy Kibbled • • • GET A 3-LB.
