Giant Water Bug

In weedy ponds in the woods
where a thick layer of leaves and
soft oozy mud is present the giant
water bugs thrive at the expense of
their smaller and less protected
neighbors. Some of the more husky
ones reach a length of more than
2]2 inches. This monster of the
pool is a bloodthirsty, cruel neigh
bor, fattening on the soft bodies of
his victims and so well equipped for
the mode of life he lives the.t they
are helpless before such aggressive
strength and power.
Sit beside one of these battle
grounds and see for yourself the
tactics used by these predacious
beetles. You cannot mistake them
because of their size. They are oval
and somewhat flattened in shape, a
rich brown above and yellowish be
neath. They show he characteristic
overlapping of the wings, which is
j true of all bugs.
Watching for the giant water bug
to dash from his retreat among the
water plants, you see other wa.er
bugs, smaller editions of their form
idable cousin. They use the same
rapacious methods, but go after the
smaller fry—the back-swimmers ana
dragon-fly nymphs.
Suddenly you see a great brown
bug make its way swiftly across the
clear space in the water where there
