Beivoir Building On Schedule Despite Labor Shortage 'We Don't Take No for an Answer' in Procurement, Quartermaster Explains Construction of 680 cantonment buildings at Fort Beivoir, Va., 12 miles below Washington, is running ahead of schedule despite an initial shortage of carpenters and a cur rent shortage of sheet metal work ers and plumbers, it was learned today While cantonment projects in many sections of the country are running far behind original sched ules, 11 new buildings that were scheduled for completion at Belvair, on January 3, were turned over to the Army last night. It was said that by Friday, when 14 additional buildings are due to be finished, 39 structures will be turned over to officials. Another 203 buildings scheduled to be ready by January 3 are more than 70 per cent finished. First Group on Schedule. The original group of 15 buildings scheduled to be finished on Novem ber 25 were completed on schedule by the Charles H. Tompkins Co. of Washington and already are oc cupied by men of the 294th Depot Engineer Company, the 56th En gineer Shop Company, the 31st En gineer Combat Company and Com pany A of the 84th Engineer Regi ment. These troops are part of the Regular Army increase under the National Defense Act. Maj. Oliver F. W. Cromwell, con structing quartermaster, in dis cussing the work at Fort Belvoir declared today that "every one here is on the ball. When a knot shows up we find out whose bailiwick it's in and he rolls up his sleeves and goes after it.” He said an initial shortage of carpenters was overcome, while a current shortage of sheet metal workers and plumbers "is coming along all right.” F’ight for Materials. Maj. Cromwell said Fort Belvoir has had to fight for heating and plumbing materials, like other can tonments, but that when materials are needed "we don’t take 'no' for an answer. We send an officer to the factory and he sits with the president until our stuff is shipped. "The manufacturers are having a tough time meeting these sudden \ demands from so many cantonment projects. However, every one here wants to make our schedule on time and we just won't let them turn us down. We work from 12 to 20 hours a day in the office and we intend to keep it up until the job is finished—on time.” Mrs. Marjorie Meurer Dies; Prominent Artist Mrs. Marjorie R. Meurer, 40.
