Defense Sidelights New Quarters for Raid Warden Service Will Be Opened Tomorrow Evening New headquarters of the air-raid warden service for the District will be opened formally at 8 p.m. tomor row at 1341 Maryland avenue N.E. Chief Air Raid Warden Clement Murphy will be host to Commis sioner Young, defense co-ordinator; Col. Lemuel Bolles. executive direc tor of civilian defense, and other officials; The old firehouse on Mary land avenue has been renovated and provides offices for the chief warden and his staff. Residents of the Brentwood area are asked by Mrs. Helen Schmarler, chairman of housing, to co-operate with billeting officers, who are en gaged in a house-to-house survey to determine emergency space avail able. Every family will be asked to provide certain basic information on a questionnaire drawn up by the Office of Civilian Defense. Mrs. Eva O. Steiner, director of the Women’s Battalion Dance Com mittee, announces that hereafter all buses bound for camp dances will leave the new battalion headquar ters, Pennsylvania avenue and Ninth street N.W. Hostesses will assemble on the second floor of Service Club I£o. 1 to be checked in. Informa tion concerning the service men’s dances may be obtained by calling Executive 5440, branch 28 or 29, be tween 10 am .and 6 pm. Hundreds of new volunteers signed up for defense work at a rally of more than 1.000 young peo ple at the Jewish Community Cen ter last night. Speakers included Mary K. Browne, former national tennis champion, now director of physical education for the Office of Civilian Defense; MaJ. Edward J. Kelly, superintendent of police; Chief Murphy, and George Kneilson, di rector of youth activities for the 3d Corps Area, O. C. D. The Midway Citizens* Association w'ill meet at 8 o'clock tonight at Morgan School, Florida avenue and California street N.W. William Mileham, deputy air raid warden for the inidcltv area, will speak, and matters pertaining to defense hous ing and nutrition will be taken up A movie of an actual air raid and a demonstration of fighting ineen d’arv bombs are scheduled for a civilian defense mass meeting for residents of the Chevy Chase area to be held at 8 o'clock tonight in the Woodrow Wilson High School The meeting is being held under .ioint auspices of the Chevy Chase Civilian Defense Committee, headed by Capt. W. L. Clemens, assistant to Col. Bolles, and the Citizens Association of Chevy Chase, the Chevy Chase Business Association the National Cathedral Post of the American Legion, the E. V. Brown and Lafayette Home and School Associations and the Sanctuary Sodality of the Blessed Sacrament School. Col. Bolles will be the principal speaker, and there will be discus sion of air-raid precautions and plans for emergency feeding and housing, auxiliary fire and police protection and protection for school children. In determining “gain" in ca$e of property acquired before March 1, 1913 adjusted as provided in sec tion 113 (b) of the Internal Revenue Code as amended, whichever is greater, should be used, and in de termining “loss” the cost, so ad justed, should be used. If the prop erty were acquired after February 28, 1913, the cost, except as other wise provided in section 113, of the code as amended, should be used. The taxpayer’s return should state the following facts: (a> for real estate, the location and de scription of the land and improve ments: <b) for bonds or other evi dences of indebtedness, name of issuing corporation, particular issue, 4,000 British Casualties Reported at Hong Kong B? the Associated Press. OTTAWA, Feb. 4 —British casual ties at-Hong Kong, including Cana dians, were 4,000 killed or wounded, "at a very rough guess,” Defense Minister J. L. Ralston told the House of Commons last night. Mr. Ralston said it was estimated the whole Hong Kong garrison num bered about 12,000 and that about one-third were casualties in the Japanese assault. He was quoting a message received by the British War Office.
