By EDWARD C. STONE
Combined assets of the building
and loan associations doing business
in the District of Columbia totaled
*173.139.929 as of February 28 ac
cording to the monthly analysis re
leased yesterday by F. Willson
Camp, secretary. This reflects an in
crease of $13,191,706 over the com
parable period of last year, al
though a slight decline under the
preceding month is noted when re
sources reached the high water mark
of $173,544,212.
loans made on real estate at the
end of February 1941 were given
at $149,623,898 while this year the
figure had climbed to $162,486,029 or
an increase of $12,862,131. Amount
due share holders also revealed a
substantial gain, rising from *141.
939,366 last year to $149,616,368 or
a net increase of $7,677,302. Surplus
and reserves continue to show
marked improvement, growing $2.
854.852 during the year. The pres
ent reserves. *13.890,601, are the
highest ever recorded.
While construction loans reflected
the expected slump the total amount
of mortgage loans made during Feb
ruary showed an increase over 1941
of $322,359. Over $3,500,000 in ad
vances were recorded during the
month, the report disclosed.
Small share accounts closed dur
ing recent weeks indicate the In
vesting members are taking ad
vantage of the patriotic urging of
the member groups and are trans
ferring these funds to United States
defense bonds. These withdrawals
are paced, however, by share ac
counts opened by new members.

Few Carriers, Motors

Fairly Good Showing
By VICTOR EUBANK.
Associated Press Financial Writer.
NEW YORK, March 21.—Scat
tered stocks were successful In at
tracting timid buyers today, but
many market leaders remained in
the wall-flower division.
A few rails, motors and coppers
acted fairly well after a hesitant
start, but such gains as appeared
generally were negligible fractions.
Steels, rubbers and aircrafts did vir
tually nothing and, at the close,
trends were uneven. Losses, on the
whole, were small, but a handful of
recessions running to a point or so
was in evidence.
Dealings were sluggish, transfers
for the two hours approximating
150.000 shares.
Stimulating war news was lacking i
although boardrooms continued
hopeful over MacArthur's chances
of smashing the Japanese in the
Southwest Pacific. Nothing par
ticularly inspiring was discerned in
business or industrial developments
and the usual lightening of commit
ments lor the week end again
proved a restraining factor.
Among stocks Homestake Mining
posted another new year’s low,
along with American Telephone, Fa
jardo Sugar and Union Carbide.
The tax outlook contributed to the
heaviness of some of these share*.
Homestake continued to reflect fears
that war-time restrictions might af
fect gold production seriously and
consequently threaten dividends.
Word that legislation permitting
the merger of Western Union and
Postal Telegraph would be Intro
duced soon helped stocks of these
companies to keep their balance.
United Corp. preferred showed
quiet strength in the wake of the
S. E. C. ruling that this concern
could reduce the stated value of this
S3 cumulative senior stock to $5 par
from the present $50, the ultimate
object being resumption of dividends
and clearing up of arrearages.
On the improved side the greater
part of the session were General ]
Motors. Chrysler, N. Y. Central, j
Pennsylvania. American Smelting, j
and Standard Oil (N. J.). Lehigh
Valley Coal preferred and Chicago
Great Western preferred edged into
new high ground for 1942.
Bonds were narrow and commodi
ties irregular.
